16/3 Deluxe Vintage Brut 2013
Beautiful fine bead and foamy collar, pale straw colour. Brioche yeastyness and honey on the nose, floral and fruit with the gorgeous creamy mouthfeel on the palate, finishing with exact dryness.

Twelve years in the bottle and kept at the perfect temperature. Disgorged 2017

I've been working for Dr. Andrew Pirie for quite some years, and this was the first Vintage I salted away along with consecutive Vintages, of course!

Today, I decided to toast Andrew's dear dog Ollie with my first Apogee Vintage 2013.
Ollie was still a puppy when I began working for Andrew. Always a crowd pleaser and back then very mischievous.
He loved to steal hats and socks as people were repacking their bags at Apogee. Those who were there will never forget how hard it was to get them back, if at all!

But, oh, those big brown eyes made you melt! His youthful exuberance was constant for years. Zoomies on the lawn a favourite. 😅
We noticed him slowing down in recent months, and tests confirmed he wasn't well. So, with great sadness, our Apogee Ollie, who bought much joy to our visitors, is still with us but not his presence...

A toast to you, dear Ollie....
from Bron and your fans....x

Andrew is showing the height of his Guyot Scott-Henry trellising system here at Apogee Vineyard. The height of 2.2 metres gives the grapes a larger leaf area per kilo of fruit, which New Zealand research has found to give the wine more fragrant aromas.
The netting is now on for bird protection, and Vintage 2025 is looking terrific 👌

Good nutrition is a key factor in wine quality. Adequate phosphorous, potassium, and just the right amount of nitrogen results in enhanced flavour if the rest of the viticulture is in order. "That the struggling vine produces the best wine " relates more to water supply, which, like nitrogen, must be at the right level - not too much nor too little. At APOGEE, we keep a check on nutrition with annual petiole (leaf stalk) testing (photo). This tells us how much is taken up by the vine in peak season. We then adjust our vine feeding during the next winter according to these results. Without good nutrition, the "terroir" D express itself.

RM Williams OUTBACK Magazine a few months ago featured a terrific write-up by Andrew Bain.
Dr Andrew Pirie's lifelong passion behind the elusive concept of wine terroir to establish a new wine region of Tasmania. The finer points are still being debated, but the initial concept seems to have worked.

Andrew was included in the addition along with 19 other Top Australians. RM Williams OUT BACK Magazine have run the feature again in the Oct/Nov issue.
