What is this strange figure wandering through Arthur Boyd’s imagination?

Boyd turned to biblical stories not to illustrate scripture, but to explore vulnerability, isolation and the human condition. In the Book of Daniel, a faithful servant is cast into a den of lions and survives the night unharmed. Where artists like Rubens painted it as a dramatic test of faith, Boyd offers something quieter.

His spectral white lion is a visionary presence rather than a predator. Daniel appears fragile yet unthreatened, and the emphasis falls not on physical survival but on inner conviction. The result is a small, haunting meditation on fear, resilience and grace.

Lot 504 | Arthur Boyd (1920–1999), Daniel in the Lion’s Den, oil on composition board, 20 x 24.5 cm, frame 23 x 27 x 4 cm

A bit of a mystery this week.

Early 1900s, NSW government padlocks, bench seat height. Our best guess? Workers' lockers - a place to stash your things (and your sandwich).
