Recently we attended the Aircraft IT and Aircraft Commerce Airline & Aerospace MRO & Flight Operations IT Conference . As the first of Ed Haskey and Charles Williams's face-to-face conferences since COVID, and, by any measure, it was a brilliant success and a credit to Ed, Charles and the team.

With Henk Hof from Eurocontrol and Martin Mitev from Air Baltic, Closed Loop presented two discussions about a crucial subject for the industry but to which seem to be paying little attention. Trajectory Based Operations or is a critical concept that will eventually remake the operational ecosystem for an airline.

The benefits will be profound economically, environmentally and operationally. Airlines need to have it in their strategic outlook and forward program portfolio now to have any chance of being ready for it within the decade.

We undertook to write a trip report highlighting the TBO discussion at the conference. Here it is

Most airlines are beginning to consider digital transformation and are setting up 'business improvement groups', and âTransformation' is now an Executive level or Board function in some airlines. No matter what the title, all this new activity is related to data - and lots of it, but successes to d...

We keep hearing the Airline Industry commentariat and other views of the industry's recovery trajectory from the COVID-19 catastrophe. There's palpable excitement about increasing flying in some parts of the world. But it's tempered in others, with lockdowns and border closures coming and going, messing with plans, wellbeing and airline fortunes. It remains challenging and somewhat a reality check reading the history and latest projections for the timing for a return to pre-COVID. Initially, six months to a year was the gauge, then a year, maybe two? Now it's three, maybe five. And the "zone of uncertainty" is getting more prominent as the charts project forward. All this information is in the public domain. But all these projections become somewhat uncertain when contrasted with the opportunistic changes some airlines have effected throughout the pandemic.

What will the industry look like and what needs to be done to secure its future? Please, read on... https://loopclosed.com.au/document/1389.html?publicationid=

Closed Loop is pleased to be quoted in the latest edition of ✈ Aerospace Tech REVIEW as it broaches the critical issue - even in COVID times - of Trajectory Based Operations for the Airline Industry.

Now that COVID-19 is subsiding, global aviation traffic is recovering and ready to resume growing in the years to come. The strain of this growth on the

As the airline industry continues to struggle with its COVID hangover, some airlines are making the most of it, scratching for revenue on the back of returning fleets and workforces. Still, the Airline Business Index demonstrates that operating revenues and passenger numbers remain stubbornly low. As the industry gains momentum, old structural weaknesses will resurface, adding to the dilemma of balance sheet strain. What's being done? Not much, it seems. A disorganised approach to borders and health standards reminiscent of the decade long security debacle after 9/11. And it seems the group that should be leading their industry out of the mess doesn't believe it's their job. Where's that leave them? Here's an irreverent look at the possibilities from Marcus.

We're wondering whether International Air Transport Association (IATA) needs to have a chat with us and others about the "take" it has on congestion, delays and the airline industry's environmental footprint? ANSP bashing won't' help and the billions spent on ATC systems hasn't changed anything. Perhaps, the answer lays in a different perspective? We think so. Read on...

Virtual 'Round Table' Program
Closed Loop is pleased to provide an opportunity for airline and industry people to join a round of informal discussions covering the multifaceted perspectives that the industry, not just the airlines, will be dealing with as COVID recedes into the past and the industry grapples with renewal.

The discussions will cover a specific issue in each and generally follow our New Usual video series themes. They'll be moderated but generally free-flowing and valuable resources because of their basis of collaborative interaction with peers. To maintain quality and time for everyone to have their say, we'll be limiting each Zoom group to 12, so book early!

The schedule will be updated regularly, so be sure to check our website regularly.

The New Usual Episode 4: The New Supplier.
Trajectory Based Operations won't just affect the way airlines do business. The supply-side of the industry will also see considerable change, resetting decades of practice. Instead of conceiving product lines and marketing them to airlines hoping for orders, airlines and some suppliers will be working to the same technology plans drawn years in advance. Suppliers will have clear development pathways driven by detailed requirements. And airlines will be lining up to buy. In the latest instalment in our New Usual series, Marcus presents a riveting view of what the supplier landscape might look like as the airline industry resets after COVID. , , ,

While the industry languishes in the COVID nightmare, other industries are creeping up and if airlines and the industry's leadership don't pay attention, other setbacks will emerge. The industry needs a bold plan to shake it awake and energise forward momentum. Is this is that bold plan?

The Aviation industry continues to struggle with the difficulties associated with a lingering COVID-19. Second and third waves and a resurgent strain are continuing to disrupt the industry's restart plans, adding to airlines and their customers' pain and expense, and driving uncertainty deeper into the industry's fabric. Understandably, airline focus is on revenue. Revenue management and the network folks are reported to be in lockstep everywhere, looking for demand signals that can be exploited quickly. Everyone's doing it as if survival depends on it. They're doing it individually and will run over the competition to book the drips of revenue potential that emerge. It seems to be the only game in town, except its not. There's a lot of other stuff looming, and it'll be just as important from a survival standpoint. Unfortunately, through the lens of COVID, the future might not seem so acute. But it is.

In this series of video blogs, (vlogs), created to be quick and easy, we're going to have a look at what "back to usual" might look like in the post-COVID aviation industry, and why it's important, with everything else that's going on, not to lose sight of the future.

In this first episode, we're introducing the series and looking at the importance and value of pragmatism in the management of risk in the industry and posing some challenges for the new boss of IATA. We hope you'll enjoy it.
