I posted this pic the other day of our three faithful hounds Olive (rear), Narlu (middle) and Jet (front). An interesting shot of detection dogs expertly waiting on the handler for the next command ... solid as rocks. But there's a bit more to it than might meet the eye. See, one of them in fact has a head start on the others and his/her spring(er) has kinda already sprung, even though they haven't 'moved' as such. Who gets your vote for first cab off the rank come "FIND" time!?

Exciting opportunity to join our Cane Toad Control Field Team!

Training, equipment, vehicle and accommodation provided.
Working in a team environment with day and night time work - Tuesday to Friday morning - 3 ½ days (approx 32hrs).
- Must have field survey experience.
- Environmental science student/graduate or similar preferred.

The focus for the project is on protecting natural assets on the front line of the cane toad invasion in Tabulam and the surrounding area.

Field Officers will be responsible for manual collection, trap setting and monitoring of traps and data recording on both public and private land, humane euthanasia and disposal.

Well and truly in the throes of our annual threatened shorebird monitoring program. There's not much to a Pied Oystercatcher nest as you can see, so they can be tricky to find. Life is a bit easier when the eggs are on 'pure' sand as they are here (bar the pigface), throw some pumice/driftwood/rocks around the place and those beautifully camouflaged eggs suddenly disappear too!! Its eco-investigation work 💯!

Had the privilege over the last couple of weeks to be working in Arnhem Land with dog trainer/handler extraordinaire Ryan Tate from TATE Animal Training Enterprises. Two weeks of survey with detection dogs Olive, Dash and wonder boy Darcy slaying it on the field survey front. What a team! What an adventure!

We do all sorts of feral animal monitoring and control works as part of our day to day business of protecting native/threatened species. We don't often post pictures of captured animals, it's a matter of respect really, but sometimes something extraordinary comes along and it's worth sharing. Prior to Dave's encounter last night at Evans Head the company record for biggest toad captured (held by me btw ☹️) was around 440 grams, but I've been squarely humbled with this half kilo plus specimen - amazing!

ReconEco does a lot of work around fauna monitoring, habitat replacement (nest boxes) and the like, and we’re always looking for a better way. Enter these poly, modular nest boxes from Habitat Innovation & Management, that are simply schmick. We’re looking to enhance nesting opportunities for parrots at this particular location, but I guess you never know what might show up. Whatever species does take up the offer, I hope we like them because I’m thinking they’ll be in no rush to leave this twin compartment condo! Thanks to one happy ReconEco crew for helping to get this fun job done!
