📢 ATO focus on omitted income, expenses and GST credits

🔍 They are stepping up compliance action against businesses that omit income, over-claim deductions or GST credits, or use business funds for private expenses.

⚠️ Common mistakes include failing to report cash sales, claiming private expenses and keeping inaccurate records.

📊 In 2025–26, audits uncovered more than $210 million in unpaid taxes, with over $50 million in penalties issued for deliberate under-reporting.

✅ How to stay compliant: 💰 Report all business income, including cash sales. 🧾 Claim only eligible deductions and GST credits. 🏦 Keep business and personal finances separate. 📁 Maintain accurate records.

💳 Card surcharges are changing from 1 October 2026!
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has removed its prohibition on “no-surcharge” rules, paving the way for card networks to stop businesses from adding a separate fee for card payments.

🔹 What’s changing?
From 1 October, eftpos, Mastercard and Visa will generally prohibit card payment surcharges. American Express, UnionPay and PayPal have also announced they will remove surcharging.

💰 What does this mean for businesses?
Businesses will generally no longer be able to add a separate surcharge for customers paying by card. Card acceptance costs can instead be reflected in the overall price of goods and services.

🛍️ What does this mean for consumers?
The price displayed should generally include the cost of accepting card payments, rather than adding a separate card surcharge at checkout.

📌 What isn’t affected?
Weekend and public holiday surcharges, booking fees and service fees are not card payment surcharges and are not covered by these changes.

🔎 For businesses: Check with your payment service provider to make sure your systems are ready for the new rules.

📅 Effective: 1 October 2026

💳➡️ One price, regardless of which card you use.

📢 ATO shadow economy prosecutions rise 80%

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has reported an 80% increase in successful non-lodgment prosecutions between 2024–25 and 2025–26. 📈

Over the past two years, the ATO has:
🔹 Successfully prosecuted 350+ individuals and entities
🔹 Secured 305+ convictions
🔹 Seen more than $2.7 million in fines imposed by the Courts 💰

The ATO says deliberate non-lodgment and shadow economy activity can undermine legitimate businesses, reduce public revenue and impact workers’ entitlements.

📌 Key takeaway: Lodging tax returns and meeting tax and super obligations are legal requirements. Deliberate non-compliance can have serious financial and professional consequences.

🚗 Top 5 myths busted: Cents per kilometre method!

Don’t let misinformation lead to costly tax mistakes. 💸

❌ Home-to-work travel is generally not claimable
📝 You still need records — even when claiming up to 5,000 km
🚘 Novated leases generally don’t qualify for car expense claims
📉 Decline in value is already included in the cents per kilometre rate
🔄 You can’t switch between cents per kilometre and logbook methods during the year

💡 Always check how the car is used for work and keep the right records.

📱 Use the ATO app’s myDeductions tool to record work-related trips.

📢 Payday Super myth busting!

With the third month of Payday Super underway, here are three important reminders for employers:

🔹 Myth: If your payroll provider isn’t ready, you don’t need to comply.
✅ Fact: Employers must meet their Payday Super obligations from 1 July 2026.

🔹 Myth: If it isn’t reported through STP, Payday Super doesn’t apply.
✅ Fact: Employers must report qualifying earnings and super liability through STP.

🔹 Myth: Delays caused by a fund or provider mean the employer isn’t liable.
✅ Fact: Super must reach employees’ funds within 7 business days. Employers remain responsible for getting payments right and on time.

Stay informed, check your processes and make sure your clients are ready to meet their obligations. 💡
