Plans of Management and Safety: Bridging the Gap Between Design and Daily Use

Safe by design = Safe by management.

It’s not enough for places to look good — they need to work safely every day. That’s where Plans of Management come in.

A POM is the bridge between design and daily life. It sets out who manages what, when, and how — from carparks and waste removal to parks and public toilets. Done well, it turns good design into safer practice for staff, visitors, and the community.

I’ve written a new blog about why Plans of Management matter, and why they need to be part of the design process from day one.

Plans of Management connect design with day-to-day safety. Learn why they must start early to reduce risks, prevent crime, and create safer spaces.

Last night was the kick-off for in the form of a live panel talk. The topic was something close to our hearts -
and I spend most of our days immersed in the concept – our mission – to help communities define their place, and vision what they would like them to become.
So, it was refreshing to hear the panels perceptions of place in our own backyard – Long Jetty.
The discussion covered a lot of topics but what I found most interesting was the panellists views on how place shapes us. The theme of duality and contrast was relativity consistent. The juxtaposition of rural and urban, small town and the big city. It’s an interesting idea for us to explore - how one’s personal view of place comes into perspective once you have left that place.

This parallels strongly with other people we have spoken to on the Central Coast – in various projects we have undertaken for
The idea of a place drawing you back – home – to your roots is a magnetic thing shared by so many. I believe it can only strengthen the already friendly neighbourhood vibe that Long Jetty exudes – and we look forward to being part of its continued evolution. Well done panelists. A great start to the event

Council is working on a Place Plan for Picton town centre – a guiding document that identifies the vision, character, structure and form of a place – now and into the future.

We would love your input. Visit our Your Say page to find out more about the Picton Place Plan, view the introductory video, and take our quick survey. https://www.yoursay.wollondilly.nsw.gov.au/

ARTSCAPE, in collaboration with The Design Partnership, is currently undertaking a Place Plan for The Entrance Town Centre.

The Entrance Place Plan is an exciting opportunity that draws together past studies and future aspirational projects with the intent to activate and revitalise the town for the benefit of locals and visitors.

The Place Plan has the opportunity to create both local and visitor markets – establishing activations, events and spaces that will make The Entrance number one on everyone's destination list.

Whether you live locally, or your a regular visitor, we’re looking to understand your ideas for the town so we can get projects moving – no matter how big or small they may be. In fact – a lot of what place planning is all about, is starting small – seeing some quick results and benefits – and building towards a common end-goal.

Consultation is currently underway – visit Central Coast Council’s engagement portal:

www.yourvoiceourcoast.com

There – you can watch a short video that describes the project in more detail and put your ideas on the Ideas Wall.

We will be collecting feedback until 5pm Sunday 2 August.

Together we can create a series of places that collectively have the power to positively transform The Entrance!
