A perfect Autumn day in Robe, reminding us why it's one of SA's favourite holiday spots. I was visiting to learn about childcare (or the lack of) in Robe and the Council's vision for the future of childcare in their community.

Swinging with the Stars is the major fundraising event for Stand Like Stone Foundation, one of my passion projects.

The event pairs local personalities with trained dancers for a night of courage, community and celebration, with all funds raised staying in the Limestone Coast.

This year a colleague of mine and Naracoorte local, Justine Drew is dancing to raise funds for the Naracoorte Seeds Sub-Fund which strengthens regional wellbeing, agricultural resilience and positive community outcomes.

If youโ€™re able to you can support Justine by:

๐Ÿ’ƒAttend a fundraising event, 28 March โ€“ Wokkaโ€™s Famous Bootcamp with Naracoorte Health & Fitness Centre
๐Ÿ’ƒDonate goods or services
๐Ÿ’ƒSpread the word and say hi at the Naracoorte Fringe Street party tomorrow
๐Ÿ’ƒAttend the main event 27 June at The Barn Palais
๐Ÿ’ƒDonate cash via the QR code or at https://www.standlikestone.com.au/news/stars-of-swinging-with-the-stars-2026-announced

What makes a good workshop, conference or meeting venue and why does it matter?

I was reflecting on this question at the FaB Mentor gathering in February.

It matters because participants who come along to your events have given up their time to attend - in return we need to value their attendance, by providing a comfortable venue. Likewise presenters appreciate a venue with good facilities.

What makes the venue 'good' for a participant? Here's some of my list:

๐Ÿ˜Š There are windows - which provide natural light and an outlook (rather than feeling trapped in a room)
๐Ÿ˜Š Good coffee and tea (tea drinkers are often forgotten about)
๐Ÿ˜Š Good food
๐Ÿ˜Š Easy parking
๐Ÿ˜Š There is space to move
๐Ÿ˜Š The room is accessible for everyone
๐Ÿ˜Š Not too cold and not too hot

What makes the venue 'good' for the event organiser? All of the above plus:

๐Ÿ˜Š the less equipment we need to bring the better. Therefore I appreciate good tech that is user friendly - think screen and projector and other ๐Ÿ˜Š equipment is available on site - white board
๐Ÿ˜Š the room is setup for us
๐Ÿ˜Š catering is provided on site
๐Ÿ˜Š it's affordable and where possible I prefer to use community facilities, this is our way of supporting community organisations

Thanks Australian Wool Innovation for inviting me along, in my role as a FaB Mentor to the Sticky Beak Day at Wangolina focused on rebuilding ewe numbers, Managing ewes for productivty and profitability.

At the workshop four options were discussed:

๐Ÿ‘ Buying ewes - dry/scanned in lamb

๐Ÿ‘ Retain more stock - older ewes / ewe lambs

๐Ÿ‘ Joining ewe lambs

๐Ÿ‘ Accelerated joining

We also had a 'sticky beak' at the sheep yards on the property.

The workshop provided a holistic examination of each option - examining the strategy, finances and animal nutrition.

Australia's Greatest Conman documentary is a masterclass in poor governance and a reminder to anyone involved in decision making the importance of asking questions and to verifying the answers. Being on a board is not just about sitting around a board table, it's also about getting out and about to understand the organisation's activities.

Congratulations to all winners and finalists of the Grain Producers SA Grain Industry Awards, particularly Limestone Coast and MacKillop Farm Management Group: farmers Bruce McLean (Sustainability Award) and Jeremy Lush (Young Grain Producer of the Year) and agronomist Adam Hancock (Innovation Award) for being selected as finalists.

The dinner was a wonderful event celebrating the SA Grain Industry. The key messages from the winners and finalists was the importance of the South Australian grain industry in feeding the world, that family support is critical to the success of their operations and valuing and being involved in community activities.

Today we farewelled a champion of the community, Dr Susan Lyndsay Charlton AM.

Sue was instrumental in establishing the Limestone Coastโ€™s Community Foundation - Stand Like Stone. Sue was deeply committed to spreading the message of community philanthropy and to sharing her vision for the region: a locally led organisation, built on sustainable funds, supporting local solutions and creating long term change.

Sue took every opportunity to speak to everyone and anyone, and she was formidable in garnering support for Stand Like Stone. As the inaugural Chair โ€“ or Chairman as Sue preferred (a story for another day), Sue led Stand Like Stone through its formative years, from its launch in October 2004 until December 2014. I was privileged to serve as the Executive Officer for seven of these years.

During Sueโ€™s leadership there were many โ€œfirstsโ€: the first grants distributed to the community; the first scholarships award to students; the first $1 million raised by the community for the community; the establishment of Stand Like Stoneโ€™s major fundraising event, Swinging with the Stars; and the celebration of Stand Like Stoneโ€™s first decade.

Sueโ€™s vision and leadership extended well beyond the Limestone Coast. She strengthened the national network of community foundations as a founding member, Director and Chair of Australian Community Philanthropy, now Community Foundations Australia and spent many years advocating for changes that would enable community foundations, particularly in rural communities, to have greater impact.

Sue maintained her passion for Stand Like Stone and community philanthropy throughout her life. It was an honour to share part of the journey with Sue. As Stand Like Stone enters its twenty second year, Sue leaves knowing that her vision has been realised and will endure.

โ€œLife is mostly froth and bubble, Two things stand like stone, Kindness in anotherโ€™s trouble, Courage in your own.โ€ (Adam Lindsay Gordon).

Education unlocks opportunity, breaks cycles of poverty and empowers children to reach their full potential. This is why at the Stand Like Stone Foundation we are committed to raising funds for the Back to School program - providing a gift of a $50 voucher to support students return to school in the Limestone Coast. Please consider supporting this program.

Thanks to the generosity of our Limestone Coast community, weโ€™ve reached $15,000 in our Back to School appeal โ€“ halfway to our $30,000 goal.
Every donation so far is helping remove barriers for local children, ensuring they can start the school year with the basics so many of us take for granted โ€“ uniforms, shoes, stationery and confidence.
With one week to go, weโ€™re asking our community to help us take the next step.
Every contribution, big or small, will help us support more children to start the school year ready to learn, belong and thrive.
If youโ€™ve already donated, thank you โ€“ your kindness is making a real difference. If youโ€™re able to give, now is the time when your support can have the greatest impact.

Together, we can make sure more children start school feeling prepared, supported and ready for the year ahead.
