If you've got something large moving around in your roof cavity at night, there's a reasonable chance it's a possum. In Brisbane and South East Queensland, common brushtail and ringtail possums are frequent uninvited roof guests, and they're protected under the Nature Conservation Act. That means trapping and relocating them without a permit is illegal, and killing them is a serious offence.
So what can you actually do?
🐾 Confirm it's a possum. Possums are loud, particularly brushtails. Heavy thumping, scratching and movement from dusk onwards is the classic sign. Rats and mice are lighter and tend to be audible throughout the night rather than in bursts.
🐾 Identify and seal the entry point. This is the key step and the one most homeowners get wrong. A possum can be encouraged to leave, but if the entry point isn't sealed properly once it's out, another one moves straight in. Entry points need to be found and closed off permanently.
🐾 Call a licensed wildlife handler for removal. If a possum is trapped inside your roof and can't exit on its own, a licensed handler is your legal option. They can be found through the RSPCA Queensland or your local council.
🐾 Address what's attracting them. Overhanging branches that provide roof access, fruit trees close to the house and gaps in fascia boards or eaves are the usual culprits.
Where Cure All Pest Control comes in is identifying whether what you're hearing is actually a possum, or whether it's rats or mice, which is a different problem entirely and one we can treat directly. We also identify the entry points and conditions that are making your roof accessible in the first place.
