This is what people actually buy a battery for.

Not the technical spec. The evening where the street goes dark and inside your house nothing changes. The fridge hums, the fans keep going, the internet stays up and the kids do not care that anything happened.

That is not luck. It is a Blackout Plan decided before the install, in writing, listing the circuits that stay alive and roughly how long they last.

Every year the phone runs hot the week after the first big blow. And every year we have the same conversation, which is that a battery ordered in January is not protecting anyone in January.

There is a Snapshot, a site check, the paperwork with Ergon and then the install itself. Do it in September and you are ready before the season. Do it after the first outage and you are in the queue with everyone else who just lost a freezer.

We do 5 installs a month on purpose, because they are done properly and tested in one day by our own crew. That is the whole reason we open the pre season window now.

Ask anyone around here what they lost in the last long outage and nobody talks about the electricity.

They talk about the freezer. A season of fishing, the meat from the last bulk buy, the stuff you cannot just replace at the shops.

That is the part people forget when they price a battery. You are not only buying cheaper evenings. You are buying the thing that keeps running when the street does not.

You know the routine. The power goes, someone goes out to the shed, and the generator comes out onto the carport.

Then you are up at 2am topping up fuel, the neighbours can hear it, and it runs the fridge and not much else. If the servo has no power either, you are rationing what is in the jerry can.

It works. It is just not a plan, it is a scramble.

A battery does the same job silently and by itself. No fuel runs, no cords through the door, no getting up at 2am. It switches over on its own and most people only notice because the clocks did not blink.

This is the most common conversation we have in Mackay.

Someone put solar on three or four years ago. The daytime bill dropped, which is exactly what it was supposed to do. And then the total stopped falling.

Nothing is broken. It is just that your family uses power in the evening, and that is the exact time your roof stops making it. So you sell the day at around 6 cents and buy the night back at around 25.

You do not fix that with more panels. You fix it by keeping what you already make.

Here's the part nobody explains when they sell you solar.

During the day your panels make more than the house uses, and the extra goes out to the grid. Ergon pays you around 6 cents for it.

Then the sun goes down. The aircon is still running, the kids are home, and you buy that same power back at around 25 cents.

Your system is working fine. You just don't get to keep what it makes.
