Fire ant nest on Macleay!!

Fire ants first arrived in Australia near the Port of Brisbane in 2001 — and they've now spread to our local islands, with nests detected on:
📍 Macleay Island (2023)
📍 Russell Island (2024)
📍 Karragarra Island

This isn't just a mainland problem anymore. Queen fire ants can fly, and these islands are close enough together for colonies to spread between them.

Here's why they're such a serious threat:

🔥 A painful, burning sting — multiple stings can feel like your body is on fire, and some people suffer anaphylactic shock
🐜 Aggressive swarming behaviour — large numbers can move onto a person before they're even noticed
🌿 A danger to pets and wildlife — attacks on native animals like lizards, turtles and birds have caused local extinctions overseas
🌾 A threat to gardens and crops — they can damage plants by tunnelling through roots and stems, and affect over 50 agricultural and horticultural species grown in Australia

🐜 WHAT’S HIDING UNDER YOUR HOME?

These photos are a great example of why termite inspections need to go beyond simply looking around the outside of a property.

Behind the brickwork and underneath the floor, we found mud-like termite workings extending from the masonry onto the timber framing. These concealed workings can provide termites with a protected pathway into the timber structure without being obvious from inside the home.

🔎 What these photos show:
• Mud workings running from the brickwork into the timber
• Timber framing in close proximity to masonry
• An enclosed subfloor with numerous concealed areas
• Soil, dust and debris beneath the building
• Older timber that requires probing to assess its condition
• Areas where termite entry and activity can be difficult to see without accessing the subfloor

The subfloor environment itself can make termite detection challenging. Termites can travel through concealed areas, cracks, joints and protected pathways, meaning they may be accessing structural timber while remaining completely unnoticed by the occupants.

⚠️ And this is why seeing no termites inside your home doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t have a termite problem.

💡 Winter Pest Fact! ❄️

Many people think pests disappear during winter—but that’s not the case in South East Queensland.

Our winter months (June, July and August) are generally mild, so while some pests become less active, they don’t simply vanish.

🐛 Termites remain active all year because they live underground and inside timber, where temperatures stay relatively stable.
🐜 Ants continue to forage, especially on warmer winter days.
🪳 Cockroaches often move indoors in search of warmth, food and moisture.
🐀 Rats and mice are more likely to seek shelter in homes, garages and sheds during cooler weather.

Winter is often a great time for preventative pest management, as lower pest numbers can make it easier to reduce populations before activity increases again in spring.

Keeping your home free of excess moisture, sealing entry points and maintaining regular termite inspections are simple steps that can help protect your property all year round.

⚠️ Think termites only eat houses? Think again… ⚠️

This tiny termite was found inside a power pole outside a home in Wynnum—and believe it or not, the pole was still in service! 😲

At first glance, it doesn’t look like much… until you see what was happening inside. The timber had been extensively hollowed out and packed with termite workings, even though the power pole was still in service.

⚠️ The pole is now being replaced due to the damage.

The scary part? Termites 24/7 silently working behind the scenes. By the time you spot one, they may have already caused significant damage.
