What is the REAL term for "SAFETY YELLOW"???
You may have heard clients asking for something to be painted in 'Safety Yellow', however this is a generic term that basically means a bright yellow colour that is easy to see.
In Australia, the most commonly used yellow colour is Y14 Golden Yellow (as per Australian Standards AS2700).

Why?
Well, the problem with Yellow paints in particular is they tend to have a lot of tint, which is prone to fading over time, especially when exposed to the suns UV rays for many years. To overcome this, most paint manufacturers will manufacture a 'factory batch' of Y14 yellow, so the paint has more substance and less tint.

What if my existing steelwork looks slightly lighter or darker?
Because Y14 is so common, chances are that the original items were in fact painted in Y14, but have now faded or been soiled to make them appear lighter or darker. The thing is, if you paint your new items in tinted paint - Y15 Sunflower or Y13 Vivid Yellow (the two closest colours to Y14), the new items with the yellow tint will fade faster than the Y14, meaning you'll have two different colours anyway. The best approach is to use Y14 Golden Yellow for any yellow items, so you can have confidence that your Safety Yellow steelwork will remain a nice bright yellow colour.

Choosing the Right Paint — and Preparing the Surface for Success

At Ferro-Clean we understand that in industrial environments, not all paints are created equal.

Selecting the right coating can mean the difference between a surface that lasts years — and one that fails within months.

But just as importantly, even the best paint system will fail without proper surface preparation.

The foundation of every durable coating is clean, well-prepared steel — and that’s where abrasive blasting and inspection make all the difference.
Here’s a quick breakdown of common industrial paint types and where they shine:

🎨 1. Epoxy Coatings

✅ Best for: High-wear areas, chemical plants, pipelines, tanks.
💪 Why: Excellent adhesion, corrosion and chemical resistance.
⚠️ Tip: Avoid UV exposure — they can chalk or fade in sunlight.

🎨 2. Polyurethane Coatings

✅ Best for: Exterior surfaces, structural steel, machinery.
💪 Why: Great UV resistance and color retention.
⚠️ Tip: Use as a topcoat over epoxy for a durable finish.

🎨 3. Zinc-Rich Primers

✅ Best for: Corrosion protection on steel structures.
💪 Why: Provides sacrificial protection similar to galvanizing.
⚠️ Tip: Surface prep (sandblasting!) is crucial for performance.

🎨 4. Acrylic or Alkyd Enamels

✅ Best for: Low-demand, decorative, or interior applications.
💪 Why: Easy to apply, cost-effective.
⚠️ Tip: Not ideal for heavy industrial exposure.

At Ferro-Clean, we know a coating is only as strong as the surface it’s applied to.

That’s why our team focuses on precision sandblasting, surface profiling, and the right coating system for each application.

🧰 The result? Long-lasting protection, performance, and peace of mind.

In the world of protective coatings, the quality of surface preparation makes all the difference.

At Ferro-Clean, we often talk about Class 2.5 and Class 3 sandblasting — but what do these really mean?

Both classes refer to surface cleanliness standards defined by AS 1627.4 / ISO 8501-1, which describe how thoroughly contaminants and coatings are removed before applying new paint or lining systems.

Here’s a simple breakdown 👇

Class 2.5 (Near White Metal Blast Cleaning)
· About 95% of the surface is free from rust, mill scale, and old coatings.
· Only very light stains remain, visible as slight discolouration or
shadows.
· Commonly specified for most industrial coating systems — it provides
excellent adhesion and long-term protection.

Class 3 (White Metal Blast Cleaning)
· 100% of the surface is clean — no visible contaminants or staining.
· Achieves a bright, uniform metallic finish.
· Typically used for high-performance or critical coatings, where
maximum adhesion and durability are essential (e.g. offshore, chemical,
or marine environments).

The difference between 2.5 and 3 may look small to the eye — but in terms of coating performance and cost, it’s significant.

Class 3 requires more time, media, and precision, but it delivers the cleanest possible surface for the toughest jobs.

At Ferro-Clean, we match our blasting class to the project’s needs — ensuring every surface is prepared to the right standard for its environment and coating system.
