Why I set up Fire Door Surveying Ltd.
For 12 years I was a Building Surveyor and then for a further 12 years I ran my own building maintenance company. Throughout that time I witnessed many problems with fire doors that worried and frustrated me: doors that didn’t shut completely; doors propped open; doors with missing intumescent strips; missing smoke protection; large gaps at the bottom of the doors; failed hinges or locks. The list goes on. As a contractor I was often asked to carry out repairs to doors and even alter doors and install vision panels (which we never did as it would have ruined the integrity of the doors.) Since the tragic events at Grenfell I decided that I would do something about it and I have become a fully qualified Fire Door Inspector under the the FDIS scheme. I am qualified to survey and report on all fire and escape doors. When carrying out a survey I will check over 25 different items on each fire door assembly and I will provide a thorough and detailed report. At least now I feel like I am doing something worth while.
