🌾 THEY SHOULD HAVE A VOICE. BUT THEY DON’T GET A VOTE.

That was one of the important messages from my recent presentation at the NextGen Ag Forum in Townsville.

And Annie has been given her latest “work experience” assignment… summarising the whole thing! 😂🎓

Succession planning is about the whole family having conversations.

It’s about listening. 👂
Understanding what each person wants.
Talking about expectations.
And dealing with the difficult issues before they become BIG issues.

But there’s something we should never lose sight of.

🚜 It’s Mum and Dad’s farm.
🏡 Mum and Dad’s assets.
✍️ And ultimately, Mum and Dad’s decision.

The children deserve to be heard.

They deserve clarity.

And ideally, they should understand why Mum and Dad have made the decisions they’ve made.

But succession planning should never become a negotiation about what the children believe they’re entitled to.

Because fair doesn’t always mean equal.

And a good succession plan isn’t simply about dividing assets.

It's the child who controls access. 😬

Here's a pattern we see far too often: 👇

The eldest son won't let anyone near his father. 🙅♂️ Not us. Not an advisor. Not anyone who might have an honest conversation about fairness.

Why? Because deep down, he doesn't want that conversation to happen. 😔 He's protecting a position, whether he'd admit it or not.

So the gatekeeping continues. Year after year. 🔒

And here's the brutal truth: when Dad passes away 💔 and there was never a fair conversation... the family doesn't grieve quietly. They go to WAR. ⚔️

The child who fears what fairness will cost them is often the most dangerous figure in the whole succession story. Not because they're evil. Because fear makes people protect themselves, even at the cost of everyone else. 😢

Most solicitors are order takers. 📝 You tell them what you want. They write it down. Done.

But the other 80%? 🤯 The human element? The family dynamics? The conversations about fairness, contribution, expectations, and unspoken tension?

🤐 Sometimes the biggest barrier to succession... is something Dad can't say out loud. 🤐

Here's a scenario we see more than you'd think: 👇

Dad won't pass the farm to his son. 🚜 Not because his son isn't capable. Not because he doesn't trust him.

It's because he doesn't trust where it'll end up. 😬 He's worried. Scared, even. And he can't bring himself to say it out loud.

So instead of talking about it? He does nothing. 🙅♂️ Paralysis. Silence. Year after year.

This is one of the MOST common reasons succession planning stalls completely. 📊 Not conflict. Not stubbornness. Just... unspoken fear. 😔

Here's the good news: 🙌 An outsider can say what no one inside the family can. We can name the thing that's actually going on — gently, respectfully, without taking sides.

Here's how it played out: 👇

3 kids on the farm. 🚜 3 kids off the farm. 🏙️ A will that simply said "sell and divide by six." 📄

Sounds fair, right? ⚖️ Equal shares, equal split, no drama.

Except... it wasn't fair. Not really. Because "equal" and "fair" are NOT the same thing. ❌

One person's fear of having the fair conversation 😰 talked Mum out of fixing it before it was too late.

And the result? 💔 The WHOLE family lost. Not just money. Relationships. Trust. Connection.

$30 million couldn't buy back what that family lost when the hard conversation got avoided. 😢
