You know the one. Dad brings it up somewhere between the front gate and the machinery shed, looks straight ahead the whole time, and neither of you mentions it again for two years.

That's not avoidance. That's how rural families have always done hard conversations — sideways, in motion, with an exit ramp.

The problem is a ute chat doesn't produce a document. It doesn't tell the bank who's farming next. It doesn't stop one sibling paying out three others at a price that bankrupts the farm.

Your dad built this place with a shovel and no annual leave. Your kids might inherit a lawsuit instead.

Here's what actually kills family farms — it's not drought, and it's not the bank. It's the conversation nobody had at Christmas lunch because everyone was scared of ruining the mood.

One family we worked with had four kids and one farm. No will update since 1994. By the time we sat down with them, two of the siblings weren't speaking.

We didn't fix that in one meeting. But we gave them a room where the hard questions got asked out loud, with someone neutral in the chair.

In rural families, the hardest conversations are often the ones we keep putting off. Ask how someone is really going. Listen to the answer. Then keep talking.

📱 CHAPTER TWO — WHAT DOES SIGNIFICANT LOOK LIKE?
🚗 Imagine your children driving home from your funeral.

The service is over.

The speeches have been made.

And now your kids are sitting together in the car, talking about you, the family and what happens next.

🤔 What do you want them to be saying?

Probably not...

💰 “I got the biggest cheque.”

🚜 “I got the most valuable piece of the farm.”

⚖️ “At least Mum and Dad divided everything perfectly equally.”

For most farming parents I meet, significant looks very different.

❤️ I want the kids to still be close.

🎄 I want them still turning up at Christmas as mates.

🚜 I want the farm to remain in the family.

👨👩👧👦 I want the grandchildren to know where they came from.

💬 And I want our children to understand WHY we made the decisions we made.

That leads to another question I ask families.

💔 What would break your heart if it happened after you were gone?

Your children no longer speaking?

The farm being sold because the planning wasn't right?

Your grandchildren losing their connection with the family?

Christmas becoming three separate Christmases because the kids can't sit around the same table? 🎄💔

Don't dismiss those fears.

They're actually telling you something incredibly important.

👉 They're telling you what your succession plan needs to protect.

Because a significant legacy isn't measured by the size of your balance sheet.

You can leave behind a $50 million farming enterprise...
..and a family that never speaks again.

Is that really a successful legacy? 🤷♂️

For me, succession planning isn't simply about who gets what.

🧭 It's about designing what you want your family to look like when you're no longer sitting at the head of the table.

❤️ Relationships.

🚜 Assets.

🤝 Understanding.

👨👩👧👦 Connection.

🎄 And hopefully, kids who are still turning up at Christmas as mates.

That's what significant looks like.
