OUR OPERATIONS

A low-altitude helicopter magnetic and radiometric survey focusing on the northern part of the Maldon Goldfield will be undertaken in the coming months, with exact dates to be confirmed. During the week-long survey, residents may notice a helicopter flying at low altitude across the area.

The survey will measure subtle variations in the Earth’s magnetic field and naturally occurring radiation, collecting detailed geophysical data that will help the exploration team better understand the geology beneath the surface.

The information gathered is expected to:

🔹 Improve understanding of the area’s geological structure and lithology

🔹 Assist in identifying new targets for future drilling and geochemistry investigations

This survey will complement the soil sampling and resistivity surveys undertaken at Maldon’s north, helping to build a clearer picture of the goldfield as exploration work continues across the Maldon Gold Project.

💡 Did you know?

Environmental monitoring is carried out across the Maldon Gold Project, including at the Union Hill Mine, the Porcupine Flat Processing Plant, and several other sites in and around Maldon.

Dust monitoring stations measure both soluble and insoluble solids, while groundwater and seepage detection bores help track water quality over time.

The data collected helps build a better understanding of local conditions and informs ongoing environmental management across the project area.

OUR HISTORY

Planning for our Lowther Street community space is progressing, with the project continuing to take shape following a recent committee meeting.

While the full vision for the site is still evolving, we are excited to share some of the key features currently planned for the space:

🔹 A scenic walking track where visitors can take a stroll, walk their dogs, and enjoy the natural environment

🔹 A series of informative signs sharing the rich and fascinating history of the Maldon Goldfield

🔹 Physical elements of both historical and modern mining incorporated into the development of the space

Our aim is to create a space that respects and enhances the site’s natural features, where both locals and visitors can enjoy the environment while learning about Maldon’s rich gold mining heritage.

The first phase of work is already underway and includes w**d removal, debris clearing and general tidying ahead of future development.

We would like to thank the committee members for their enthusiasm, ideas and ongoing involvement in the project. We look forward to creating a destination that celebrates Maldon’s heritage while providing a multi-faceted space the community can enjoy for years to come.

Works to refurbish the Union Hill Viewing Platform have recently been completed, ensuring safe and ongoing access for visitors.

The viewing platform overlooks our Union Hill open cut mine and decline portal, providing an opportunity to observe modern mining operations while taking in one of Maldon’s most significant historic mining landscapes.

Gold was first discovered at Union Hill in the 1850s, and shallow surface workings soon progressed deeper, with mining companies sinking shafts to access the rich Eaglehawk and Linscotts reefs underground. The area was later mined as an open cut operation from the late 1980s, with the underground decline established in the 1990s.

We thank visitors for their patience while the refurbishment works were completed and are pleased to have maintained the viewing platform as a local point of interest for both residents and tourists.

OUR PEOPLE
OUR ENVIRONMENT

Throwback to 2024, when we had an unexpected addition to the team at our Porcupine Flat Processing Plant.

This feathered fellow, named “E”, invited himself onto site and decided to stick around! We initially assumed he had wandered over from neighbouring Porcupine Village, but they assured us their resident emu was safe and sound at home.

Over the following days, E made himself comfortable overseeing operations, inspecting equipment and eavesdropping through office windows.

E was soon rehomed to Porcupine Village, where we’re pleased to report he has since settled in well and even found himself a girlfriend.

Although he was never officially on the payroll, E certainly took his supervisory duties seriously and quickly became one of the most memorable visitors we’ve had here at Porcupine Flat.

Did you know you can visit our Porcupine Flat Processing Plant and see our gold processing operation in action?

Our public viewing platform provides an opportunity to see how ore is crushed, ground and processed to recover gold. Visitors can watch the different stages of the gold recovery process and gain a better understanding of the technology and infrastructure involved in modern gold processing.

The platform is located to the left of the processing plant entrance and is freely accessible to the public.

OUR OPERATIONS
OUR ENVIRONMENT

Following a recent geotechnical assessment, we are progressing plans for a new Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) at the Porcupine Flat Processing Plant.

The new facility, known as TSF4, will provide additional storage capacity to support processing operations. TSF4 forms part of an approved Work Plan and Planning Permit, with detailed engineering design work currently underway.

As part of the project:

🔹 New fencing will be installed around the site in the coming months

🔹 The existing Processing Plant Viewing Platform will remain unchanged

🔹 An additional groundwater monitoring bore has been installed, with further monitoring to be implemented if required

🔹 Site preparation works are expected to commence later this year

Tailings are the material remaining after gold is recovered during processing. These materials are placed in purpose-built storage facilities that are subject to ongoing oversight and regulation, including groundwater monitoring, geotechnical stability assessments, dust management, and cyanide management.

We remain committed to ensuring our tailings storage facilities are managed in a safe and responsible manner, protecting both the environment and the surrounding community while supporting the long-term operation of the Maldon Gold Project.

OUR COMMUNITY

Did you know that surplus water pumped from the Union Hill mine is distributed to around thirty local landholders?

The Nuggetty Water Group pipeline was established in 2007 by one of our predecessor companies, Alliance Resources, as part of an ongoing community initiative to help support local farmers and landholders.

In 2024, we undertook a comprehensive review of the program, including updating the pipeline mapping, environmental improvement plan, and community agreements, while also developing an audit system to support ongoing monitoring and review.

While water pumped from Union Hill is already suitable for stock watering, we’re currently installing a Lamella Clarifier, which will further improve water quality. The unit was previously used at our A1 mine near Gaffney’s Creek, where it significantly improved the quality of mine discharge water.

The Nuggetty Water Group is one of several ongoing community initiatives that we support. Others include maintaining water levels at the South German Dam, which provides an important water source for firefighting, and providing firewood donations to local residents.

These photo collages from our archives show the pipeline being installed in 2007, along with the historic moment water first began flowing through the system 🥳💧
