In this session, I will share my 10+ years of experience coaching paramedic students for interviews across all Australian states to ensure they succeed in their panel interviews and write a resume that sets them apart from the competition.

Have you ever dreamt of a creative portfolio career as an actor, writer, coach or speaker? ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Fiona Harris has had a successful career doing all of the above.

Fiona is a multifaceted talent in the Australian entertainment industry and is known for her extensive work in television, comedy, theatre, and writing. Her television credits include roles in popular Australian series such as The Beautiful Lie, Upright, and Offspring, as well as co-writing and co-starring in sketch comedy shows like Skithouse and Comedy Inc.

Fiona has penned 19 books over the last decade, including adult fiction novels, children's series, and memoirs as well as being a regular on ABC 774 and a motivational speaker, workshop facilitator, and corporate host.

She is currently working on several new writing projects, developing two television shows, and preparing to launch a corporate communications business with her husband, Mike McLeish, to assist individuals in corporate to amplify their presentation skills and audience engagement.

You have done all the hard work to get this far so don't leave the interview to chance. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Fire service panel interviews are intense and require many weeks of preparation. To be successful you need the following:

👉 the capabilities and values that the fire service are assessing
👉 an extensive list of stories/examples that you can adapt to different questions and formats
👉 confidence delivering your stories in a compelling way
👉 time to practise once you have your stories ready to go

Imposter syndrome is a phenomenon where you doubt your own skills and successes, feel you’re less worthy than other people think, and are scared that people will eventually realise that.

Recent SEEK data shows the biggest trigger for imposter syndrome is feeling like you’re not as experienced as you think you should be. The second biggest trigger is thinking you're not intelligent enough. The data also says that people experience imposter syndrome more as they progress in their career.

Over the years, I have worked with many men and women who have had to reinvent their career after navigating through divorce. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​This has included trailing spouses who have put their career on hold to support a partner and raise a family, or those who have had to change/give up a career when they have taken on the role of primary carer.

Storytelling is an essential part of succeeding at interview.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Your story needs to come through your cover letter, resume and in your interview.

Recruiters may think they make decisions based purely on logic, but their feelings also play a role in the hiring decision. It’s human nature. Emotions drive how connected we feel to other people, and those connections lead us to perceive someone in either a positive or a negative light.

The easiest way to land on the “positive” side of that equation is to tell a good story throughout the application process.

With the right story you can make the interview panel like you and believe in you!

Do you know what your skills are?​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Can you articulate them and provide specific and relevant examples?

If you answered 'no' to the above, you are like most people. As humans, we have a difficult time seeing our own skills as 'skills'. As Roy H Williams, author and marketing expert, once said "it's hard to read the label when you're inside the bottle". Often the better we are at something, the less likely we are to identify it as a skills. It often takes others who know us best to identify it for us.

If you find it difficult to identify and talk about your skills, then start by writing down answers to the following:

1) What do you learn easily?
2) What do you get good feedback about from others?
3) What do you teach others?
4) When do you feel most engaged in your work - what are you actually doing?

If you haven't updated your resume in awhile then you want to make sure it doesn't look like something from the 80's. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Here are a few signs that your resume may not be 'best practice':

👉 You still have your birth date listed
👉 You don't have a LinkedIn URL (or LinkedIn for that matter)
👉 You have a cover page as page 1
👉 You have a photo
👉 Your resume isn't tailored to your target role
👉 Your resume is not keyword-optimised to 'beat the bot'
👉 Your template is not Applicant Tracking System friendly
👉 Your resume is longer than 3-4 pages (absolute max)
👉 No compelling 'pitch' as to whey they should choose you!

If you can even identify with one of the above, do yourself a favour and ask a recruiter, resume writer or career coach to review your resume before applying for roles.
