What I’ve Learned from a Career in Real Estate
Real estate isn’t just a job, it’s an experience that teaches you more about people, resilience, and problem-solving than you’d ever expect. Having worked in the industry for so long, I’ve seen markets rise and drop, trends come and go, and client expectations shift. But through it all, a few key lessons have stayed with me:
* Honesty is always the best policy – Even when the truth is tough to hear, people appreciate transparency. Whether it’s landlords, tenants, or trades, setting clear expectations from the start prevents bigger issues later.
* Communication is everything – So many of the frustrations in property management come down to miscommunication. I’ve learned that listening—really listening—can turn a frustrated client into a loyal one.
* No two days are the same – In real estate, you can plan your day, but the job often has other ideas. Flexibility and problem-solving are essential, and you have to be prepared for anything.
* It’s about people, not just property – A great investment isn’t just about numbers; it’s about the people behind it. Understanding what landlords need, what tenants value, and how to balance both is what makes a real estate professional stand out.
* ‘No’ often just means ‘not right now’ – Whether it’s business growth, client decisions, or opportunities, timing is everything. Persistence and patience have been key in my journey.

Turning Setbacks Into Strength – Literally!
In real estate, rejection is part of the game. A deal falls through. A client chooses another agency. A lead goes cold. It stings, there’s no way around it. But at Perth Rental Management, we don’t sit and dwell on it.
We drop and do ten push-ups.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in real estate is that great teams don’t just happen, they are built. And the best way to build a strong team isn’t through micromanagement or rigid rules. It’s through support, trust, and clear expectations.
I’ve managed teams in both high-pressure situations and smooth-running offices, and the same principles always apply:
Hire the right people, then let them do their job. Micromanagement crushes confidence. If you’ve brought someone on board, trust them to deliver.
Give people the tools and systems to succeed. Chaos and confusion lead to mistakes. Structure and clarity empower people to perform.
LEAD BY EXAMPLE!! The best way to earn respect is to show up, work hard, and be willing to do what you ask of others.
Make people feel valued.
A paycheck keeps someone employed, but appreciation makes them stay.
