💡 THINGS YOUR BOOKKEEPER WISHES YOU KNEW #2

The money in your bank account isn’t necessarily your profit.

Seeing a healthy bank balance feels great… but before you start spending it, remember some of that money may already have a job!

It could include:
• GST you’ve collected
• PAYG withholding
• super obligations
• unpaid supplier bills
• loan repayments
• other upcoming expenses

This is why we don’t measure how well a business is performing by looking at the bank account alone.

Your reports tell a much bigger story.

Reconciled doesn’t always mean correct.

Seeing that lovely green “Reconciled” in Xero doesn’t necessarily mean your bookkeeping is right. 👀

A transaction can match the bank perfectly… while still being coded to the wrong account, having the wrong GST treatment, or even being recorded as an expense when it should be something completely different.

Bank reconciliation is an important part of bookkeeping, but it’s only one piece of the puzzle.

Good bookkeeping is about making sure the numbers behind that reconciliation are right too.

📣 BUSINESS OWNERS — CARD SURCHARGE CHANGES START TODAY!

Happy 1st of October! 💜

A little reminder for Australian business owners that changes to card payment surcharges take effect from today, 1 October 2026.

💳 Under the new rules, businesses can no longer add a card surcharge to applicable payments made using Visa, Mastercard, eftpos and American Express credit, debit and prepaid cards.

If your business currently passes card processing fees onto customers, now is the time to:

✨ Check the settings on your EFTPOS terminal and payment platforms
✨ Speak with your payment provider about how the changes affect you
✨ Remove card surcharge notices from your website, counter or invoices where applicable
✨ Review your pricing to make sure you're still covering the true costs of doing business
✨ Check that your accounting software and payment integrations are set up correctly

Important: This change relates specifically to card payment surcharges. It does not remove things such as hospitality weekend or public holiday surcharges.

A new month is always a good excuse for a quick business systems check! ✔️

2 YEARS OF H&E BOOKKEEPING 💜

Got our team photos back and I honestly LOVE them! 🥹

It’s a bit surreal looking at these photos and thinking about how much has changed in just two years.

What started with me having a stupid, crazy idea and Adam giving me the push (and confidence!) to actually go for it has somehow grown into an actual team, an office, an incredible group of clients and a business that I am so bloody proud of.

There have been plenty of long days, late nights, stressful moments and a LOT of learning along the way 😂 but I wouldn’t change it.

And now… I genuinely feel like our little H&E team is complete. 💜

I absolutely love the people I get to work alongside every day. Each of them brings something different to H&E and I’m so grateful to have a team who genuinely cares about our clients and the business as much as they do.

And of course, a special mention to the unofficial H&E IT department 🤣❤️ My hubby, who not only gave me the push to start this crazy thing in the first place, but has been there behind the scenes through all of it fixing things, listening to my business ramblings and supporting every crazy idea that’s followed since.

Two years ago I could never have imagined H&E looking like this.

So proud of what we’ve built. So excited for what’s next.

Apparently it’s holiday season at H&E… ✈️🌴

It seems our team has very successfully coordinated their holidays one after another…

Sue officially starts 2 weeks of holidays today 🏖️
Jaimee heads off next week for 4 weeks ✈️
And then Julie is off for 3 weeks from 21 October! 🌴

H&E will still be operating as normal throughout the holiday shuffle (although we appreciate a little patience while we're running with a smaller team at different times).

Enjoy the break ladies… Chloe & Alana definitely aren't jealous. 😂💜
