Growth doesn't happen all at once. 🌱

Sometimes it arrives through a conversation. Sometimes through a moment of reflection. And sometimes through revisiting something you've already learned.

This month we're revisiting one of our favourite programs, and it's the perfect opportunity to remind everyone that the online course is always there when you're ready for it.

If you've already purchased access, why not log back in and see what resonates now? You may be surprised by what stands out this time around.

Our hot take? A co-op is basically the group chat… but with governance!

👏 Everyone has a voice.
👏 Everyone brings something different to the table.
👏 Everyone gets to contribute to the direction.

And yes, there are still big ideas, side quests, passionate opinions, and the occasional “wait, what did we decide?” moment...but that’s kind of the magic.

Co-ops aren’t about one person holding all the power - they’re about people choosing to build something together - with shared ownership, shared responsibility, and shared wins.

At Sage Room Co-op, we believe business can be more collaborative, more human, and a lot more meaningful.

Turns out, the future of work might look a little less like a ladder… and a little more like a really well-supported group chat.

We'll soon be saying 'see you soon' to one of our wonderful juniors, Amelia, as she heads off to work on the ski slopes.

Amelia has been such an integral part of Sage Room Co-op over the years. Her warmth, hard work, and positive energy have meant so much to our team, and we’re incredibly grateful for everything she has contributed.

You will be deeply missed, Amelia, but this definitely isn’t goodbye! We’re so excited for your next adventure and can’t wait to see you again soon.⛷️❄️

The Sage Room co-directors hold regular board meetings to reflect, plan, and shape the direction of our cooperative together.

At last Friday’s meeting, one of the exciting items on the agenda was choosing locations for two upcoming gatherings: our Sage Directors Retreat in July and our Public Retreat in August.

These retreats will be important opportunities to deepen our shared vision, strengthen relationships, and create space for meaningful conversations about the future of Sage.

We’re looking forward to sharing more soon.

Some businesses are built around investment.
Worker co-ops are built around the people doing the work.

A worker co-op is a business owned and guided by its worker-members. In Australia, that shared ownership sits inside a real co-op structure with active membership and democratic decision-making.

Curious about Co-op life? Chat with any of our directors - we’re always happy to talk about our experience as a worker co-op.

For anyone considering starting a co-op, one of the most important early steps is understanding the different structures available - and how they shape the way your co-op works.

From distributing co-operatives to non-distributing models, and everything in between, each structure comes with its own approach to profit, governance, and purpose. Taking the time to explore these options can help you build something that truly reflects your values and the community you’re serving.

And if you’re curious about what co-op life looks like in practice, or want to talk through an idea, you’re always welcome to reach out. Our directors are happy to share their experiences and walk alongside you as you explore.

The Nundah Community Enterprises Cooperative (NCEC) has been quietly and consistently building a model of what an inclusive, community-rooted economy can look like. Since 1998, they’ve created meaningful, long-term employment for people with cognitive and psychosocial disabilities- work that is too often overlooked in traditional systems.

We first connected CEO/Coordinator Richard Warner at the 2023 Co-op Conference, held at one of their sites, where we also experienced their incredible . It was a powerful reminder that co-ops don’t just talk about values...they live them, every day.

NCEC’s approach centres people, place, and planet. Through their enterprises, they are not only creating jobs, but reshaping what participation in the economy can mean—building something more inclusive, more patient, and more enduring.

This is the kind of work that strengthens communities over time.

If you haven’t come across them before, we encourage you to learn more about what they’re doing.

The co-op model is used by over one billion people worldwide - and it’s growing.

Why? Because it works!

It’s a model that puts people first, encourages democratic decision-making, and creates sustainable success.

At Sage Room, we’ve adapted this global framework to support our local community of small business owners - and it’s changing the way we work, together.
