Weekly wine | 2023 Estate Tempranillo
Our Tempranillo has quickly become one of our most popular wines. It is the lightest red we make and is lovely and smooth.
 
On the palate it was lovely berry characters, cigar box and has soft tannins. It has a rich and ripe nose with aromas of blackberries with spice and cigar box oak notes.
 
Tempranillo is one of the most recent varieties we have planted, being planted about 12 years ago.
 
When we were looking at what to grow, we were planning for the future so wanted some warmer climate varieties. We now pick at least a month earlier than we used to back in the 1980’s.
Spanish and Portugese varieties were the obvious choice, partly because we wanted to be different from the our neighbours in the king valley, but also because dad loves to travel to those areas.
 
Tempranillo is typically between a pinot noir and a shiraz, in terms of body but our pinot noir this year is a bit heavier (more on that next week) so our tempranillo is currently our lightest red.
 
Halliday Wine Companion recently gave it 90 Points (Silver) and Jeni Port wrote: 
“Blueberry, plum and bright red fruits enjoy the starring role in this classy youngster. It’s no fuss – just fresh, juicy and clean fruited, aided and abetted by woody spices and gentle aromatics. Medium bodied, vibrant in acidity and clean in signature firm tempranillo tannins, it seeks a potential partnership with something spicy.”

Today we had the , joined by the Snow Gum Strings and the Itet Quartet Program at the winery.
We have supported the Flinders Quartet for decades, with my granny Vivienne Ritchie first being drawn to them.
The flinders quartet held workshops with the Snow Gum Strings yesterday and then they got the opportunity to play some pieces with them, including one of ’s songs.
The first time a Steiner music group played with the flinders quartet was when I was a student there over 16 years ago with the group the “Black Lilly’s”. We definitely weren’t as good as this though!

We are looking for guns in our Kitchen who are passionate about seasonal, locally sourced produce and creating menus that pair harmoniously with our wines.

Ou kitchen is open for lunch Friday to Sunday, Friday nights, plus functions. Typical work week is Wednesday to Sunday.

This weekend at Delatite!

On Friday we have our normal Friday nights with Taco’s and Tequila.

Saturday will be a little different with us opening from 12pm onwards for both tastings and lunch. There will also be the normal 15% surcharge because it is a public holiday.

Our tastings will run as normal (apart from the later start on Saturday).

The weather looks amazing with a top of 22 degrees so you can either enjoy lunch inside or outside on our terrace.
