Sensei Karen Gately shares her reflections on how the work of HR and People & Culture leaders is changing. The challenges aren’t necessarily new, but the complexity is.

In this article, she explores why people strategy is now business strategy, how psychological safety and accountability work together, and why learning from each other has never mattered more.

Why is telling the truth at work so hard, even for good people?

In this clip from Episode 132 of Work Savvy, Dom Thurbon, author of To Be Honest, shares three reasons the truth so often goes unspoken:

1. Managing discomfort: we worry about upsetting someone or coming across badly, and often we simply can't find the words.
2. Protecting ourselves: it's much easier to stay quiet than to tell your boss you've made a mistake.
3. Protecting others: many of the lies we tell are meant to help.

Saying "great job" when the work isn't there yet might feel kind in the moment, but it doesn't help anyone improve.

Getting the kids out the door with their hair brushed and the Weet-Bix off their cheeks. Caring for an elderly parent. Trying to stay fit, and finding quality time for the people we love.

No wonder so many of us feel stuck in a constant cycle of doing, with very little time to rest or reflect.

In this clip from Episode 133 of Work Savvy, Andrew Horsfield explains why it’s worth stepping back to ask what really matters to us, and how to shape our lives around joy and happiness, not just productivity.

What if the best person for the role never makes it past the first screen?

AI is making recruitment faster. It can process huge volumes of applications and get to a shortlist in a fraction of the time. But a system that rejects great candidates more efficiently isn’t a better system, and when strong people are screened out before anyone sees them, the loss is invisible.

In this blog, Sensei Karen Gately explores what your screening tools may really be selecting for, and why meaningful human oversight means looking at who the system rejected, not just who it recommended.

Up to 80% of workers feel disengaged. Many capable people end up stuck, exhausted or simply going through the motions, at work and in life.

In Episode 133 of Work Savvy, Sensei Karen Gately is joined by performance consultant, podcast host and founder of The Better Life Lab, Andrew Horsfield, for a practical conversation about how to avoid becoming one of them.

They unpack why capable people lose momentum, how burnout quietly takes hold, and what it really takes to reset your direction, rebuild your energy and perform at your best, professionally and personally.

Drawing on two decades of experience across business, education and elite sport, Andrew shares practical insights on navigating the "messy middle", overcoming self-doubt and aligning your time and energy with what matters most.

When workplace conflict starts to impact leadership, the first step is not always action.

Sometimes, it is understanding what is really happening. Before deciding how to respond, leaders need to take a step back, document what is occurring and look for patterns. Are people simply resisting tasks? Or is there something deeper happening, such as groups forming, behaviours escalating, or policies being ignored?

The hardest conversations in leadership often start with one simple question: “What is true about me?”

It’s easy to identify problems in our teams, our culture or our organisations. But real leadership requires the willingness to look inward and acknowledge where our own actions, decisions or behaviours may be contributing to the challenge.

In this episode of Work Savvy, Karen Gately is joined by Dom Thurbon to explore the power of “me truths” and why honest self-reflection is the foundation for stronger leadership, trust and high-performing teams.

A powerful reminder that creating a culture of honesty starts with leaders being honest first.
