Postcards from our Chief Black Sheep: first week of our inaugural river cruise down, the flock is thriving, and here’s what we’ve learnt.

A w**e bar in Arles is the fastest way to turn a group of strangers into a flock. Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer takes flamenco very seriously. A Provençal olive stall is not somewhere to be in a hurry. The hill at Hermitage is where Syrah, our Shiraz, started out, so in a way we were visiting family. Evidence of the silent disco onboard: none. And Hugh Hamilton Sparkling Shiraz travels well.

We made the same w**e three times, same hands, same everything, except the ground beneath it.
 
The result: three vineyards, three Shiraz, three completely different w**es. Compare them side by side, and you’ll taste what six generations of my family have never stopped chasing.
