TO ALL THOSE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAYS DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON
Tips from a professional truck driver:
* Recognize that you are on holiday; we are not.
We have to adhere to strict work diaries and numerous regulations that car drivers are never informed about.
* The speed limit is 100 km/h, not 90, 95, or even 85.
If you prefer to drive at a slower speed for safety, we respect that. However, please assist us by moving to the left lane and allowing us to pass in the overtaking lanes—that’s their purpose. Don’t speed up and then slow down again.
* Take breaks.
Good places to stop are truck stops, as they offer good food and restroom facilities. This supports local businesses and contributes to our country’s economy. Please also be mindful of using the car parking bays and leaving the truck bays for trucks. We are required to park trucks that are 26 meters long (or longer), and as you can imagine, we need the spaces designed for us.
* Use your headlights.
Be seen, be safe. It costs nothing extra to travel with them on. Fog lights are for inclement weather only. So unless there is rain or fog, please turn them off. You will also avoid a hefty fine for using them unnecessarily.
* Share the road.
No single group has exclusive rights. We all want to get home safely to our families.
* Share the driving.
Fatigue kills. If you don’t regularly drive long distances, share the driving responsibilities. A dead hero can’t talk.
* Minimize distractions.
Put your phone away. Let the passenger change the CD, eat while you’re stopped, and prioritize safety.
* Do not drink or drug drive.
Are the consequences of a serious injury or death worth it? You need to remain alert as you never know what’s happening in the vehicles traveling towards you. Stay alert = stay alive.
