Do you actually need one in today's job market?

Answer: Yes, you do (unless it states otherwise).

While your resume is a summary of your skills, qualifications and experience, a cover letter helps the reader understand who you are beyond the resume. It’s an opportunity to showcase your motivation, goals, passion, fit and strengths that align to the role you are applying for.

Some tips for success include:

1. Ensuring it has a clean and professional layout, and ideally matches the look of your resume.

2. Addressing the letter to an actual person – do some thorough research!

3. Tailoring it to each and every role you apply for beyond just the company name and job title. Include skills that match the job requirements, research the company and highlight specific examples that showcase how you can add value or solve their problems.

4. Ensuring your introduction is personalized and impactful e.g. In my current role at XX, I’ve successfully increased customer loyalty by 30%. I can bring this same level of impact to [Company Name], addressing your business needs effectively.

5. Mentioning something you like about the role/company e.g. I am particularly drawn to [Company Name] because of its recent awards in innovation, DEI, and workplace culture, which resonate with my commitment to high performance.

6. Keeping it within a page.

It's not as easy as it sounds, AND it takes time! Need help? I offer personalised cover letter writing as part of a package or as a standalone option. Get in touch today or follow for more tips!

The last few months of the year are usually quiet in the job market, however that doesn't mean you should ignore your resume! Now is the best time to get your resume rejuvenated and updated, ready for the next opportunity which could be just around the corner.

Hot tip: Most employers will start screening and interviewing candidates as soon as they receive a resume, so you need to get in fast! Set aside some time every 6 months to re-visit your resume and ensure it accurately captures all the new skills and achievements you've gained. You can then tailor it much quicker when a job comes up πŸ’₯

If you are struggling with finding time to work on your resume, I would love to help you. I am currently fully booked until early November, so please get in touch to secure your spot before the end of the year.
