Before BLU had delivered a single event, The Long Walk backed me to run theirs. That's the kind of risk you don't forget.

We won the job at the end of 2019, when BLU was, honestly, just a logo and a domain name. Then COVID cancelled it in 2020, and again two weeks out in 2021. We finally delivered it in 2022, over two and a half years after winning it. It remains one of the most rewarding days of my career.

The Long Walk marks Michael Long's 2004 walk to Canberra to put First Nations issues back on the national agenda, and does amazing work educating kids across Australia about Aboriginal history. Being part of growing this event means more to me than almost anything else.

Seven years on, and I'm still grateful for that first yes. Who took a chance on you before you'd earned it?

Something is always going to go wrong. I talk about this a lot with my team and with other people in the industry.

When it does, I say the same thing every time. We're not saving lives.

It sounds simple, but it's the thing that gets everyone to breathe again and just fix the problem in front of them.

Stressful job, sure. But nobody's on a table. It'll be okay.

What's the phrase you or your team fall back on when things go sideways?

Early on I landed a job at Melbourne Park. Great mentors, real professionalism, and the first place I learned how to actually be an adult at work.

But it was a bubble. Brilliant, but the same venue, day in day out. I wanted to know what it felt like to produce a live event from scratch: stage managing, wrangling entertainment, calling the show.

So I moved to an agency and got thrown in the deep end. That's where I learned the intensity this industry actually runs on.

Sometimes growth means leaving the comfortable, well-run bubble on purpose. Has anyone else made that call?

One of the things I wish more clients knew: bring us in earlier.

We get approached quite late in the planning a lot of the time, when the budget's already set and nobody's sure what's actually needed. We'll still make it work, we always do, but it costs more time and money than it should.

Bring us in early and we can help shape the budget and the vision together. Then we take care of the operations, the logistics, the compliance, all the stuff you don't want to touch. You focus on your people, your partners, and making it a great experience.

When's the last time bringing someone in early saved you a headache?

It's easy to forget where a business actually started, especially once it looks like it's going well.

So here's a reminder: BLU started with me, a backyard bungalow, and about ten years of experience to lean on.

No financial backer. No safety net.

I could complain about where I was at, or do something about it. So I got an ABN, a domain name, and got to work, building it on the values and work ethic I wanted to be known for.

It didn't make me special. It just meant I had no choice but to figure it out.

What's the version of your "backyard bungalow"? The unglamorous starting point nobody sees in the highlight reel.

The first event I ever put on, I ended up topless on the promo poster.

Toronto, 2009. Bartending in the city's gay village, playing Aussie rules on weekends, and our footy club needed to raise money. So I pitched an Aussie Bachelor auction, full Monty style. No run sheet, no experience, just an idea and a bar owner willing to say yes.

We packed the place out and raised a few grand in one night. That was the moment I knew I wanted to get into events.

What was your first "no idea what I was doing" moment that actually worked?

The sparkler finale. Fed Square rooftop. Melbourne skyline behind it.

Some moments write themselves. Our job is to make sure they happen on cue.

If your event needs moments like this, we produce them end to end.
