CHALLENING ASSUMPTIONS THAT LIMIT YOUR POTENTIAL
Recently, I noticed my teenage son was starting to broaden his culinary boundaries and it made me consider my own dislikes, such as "I don’t like tomatoes." It occurred to me that perhaps that isn’t true. I know the younger version of myself didn’t, but that was decades ago. I started considering how as adults, we may avoid things based on decisions made by a younger version of ourselves.
This raises the question: how many other areas of our lives are shaped by outdated beliefs? Maybe you’ve convinced yourself that you’re not cut out for leadership, or that you’re not capable of learning the new skills that could lead your career in a direction you dream to go. But is that rooted in a real limitation, or an assumption formed at a younger, less experienced stage of life?
If we can challenge the assumptions we’ve carried, we might find that we’re capable of so much more. As Thomas Browne said, “All the wonders you seek are within yourself”.
Sometimes, the biggest barrier to personal growth isn’t a lack of skill or opportunity—it’s holding on to an old version of ourselves that no longer fits who we are today.
What assumptions are you holding onto that could be standing in the way of your own potential?
