The ability for people to live, age and remain in the communities they know and love — surrounded by familiarity, connection and dignity.

Over the last couple of weeks, the Aberlea Board and Executive came together for a 2-day Strategy Workshop in Melbourne to think deeply about the future — not just for Aberlea, but for the broader region we are part of.

What became clear is that aged care in regional communities cannot be thought about in isolation.

It’s not just about one organisation, one town, or one service. It’s about ensuring that communities like Mortlake — and those around it — remain viable, connected and supported into the long term.

Because when services disappear, people are forced to leave. And when people leave, communities weaken.

Our focus is not just on providing care. It’s on building a model that ensures:
👉 people can stay local
👉 services remain strong and relevant, and
👉 future generations continue to benefit from sustainable, thriving communities

This requires thinking differently. It requires collaboration across the region. And it requires a willingness to look beyond organisational boundaries and think as one.

Aberlea is ready for that future.

And we hope others in the region are ready to think the same way.

It’s a 7NEWS Toowoomba story about St Vincent's Health Australia creating immersive travel-style experiences for aged care residents, giving people who don’t get out much the opportunity to enjoy new places, flavours and memories from within their home. EXCITING NEWS!

Over the past 18 months we’ve been doing a significant amount of work behind the scenes with the Aberlea Board and Executive team to think carefully about the future of aged care in Mortlake.

That work has involved looking closely at what the organisation needs for the years ahead, but also being honest about the capabilities and strengths that already exist within Aberlea. A lot of time has gone into understanding what the right leadership structure looks like, what the organisation is capable of delivering, and how we position Aberlea to remain strong and relevant for the community well into the future.

I’m really pleased to see the appointments of Leonie Kelly and Amanda Gaudion as General Managers reporting directly to the Board. Their appointments reflect a lot of the thinking and planning that has been happening over this time. They bring the experience, capability and commitment that align strongly with the direction Aberlea is heading.

When you match strong capability with clear objectives, good things can happen.

Alongside this, the Board will continue its renewal process over the next 12 months, which will further strengthen the organisation and the work being done to prepare Aberlea for the future.

All of this matters because regional aged care is changing quickly, and small communities like ours need organisations that are resilient, well governed and able to adapt.

Looking ahead… and we’ve worked in this region for over 10 yeats now… one of the things I’d really love to see across our region is stronger collaboration (nee, acceptance) between regional aged care providers. Communities like Mortlake, Cobden, Camperdown, Terang, Timboon, Warrnambool and the many neighbouring towns across our district, all face similar challenges and opportunities. By working together more closely, coming together and pooling our scarce resources… there is real potential to build stronger, more resilient, combined services that remain open, relevant and sustainable for our communities over the long term.

There is also much opportunity lost by sitting on our hands and waiting…

That conversation will continue, it must continue, and there is a lot that can be achieved over the next 5, 10 or even 20 years if regional communities support one another in the right way.

But for now, it’s simply great to see Aberlea continuing to build for the future of Mortlake and the surrounding district.

Communities like ours deserve strong, local aged care and it’s encouraging to see the work being done to ensure that continues.

Over the past year, Aberlea has undertaken a major governance and organisational renewal — modernising its Board, strengthening oversight, and preparing for the new Aged Care Act and the strengthened Quality Standards now in effect.

When we began this work, our focus was simple: understand where Aberlea was, where it needed to be, and what capabilities and governance structures would best support its future. This involved working closely with the Chair, CEO (Leading’s own David Knight) and existing Directors to map current capability, identify gaps, and outline what best-practice governance looks like for a modern, community-owned aged care provider.

Following a national search, we met many outstanding candidates aligned to Aberlea’s mission. From over 100 respondents, we progressed to 30 pre-screens, 13 shortlist interviews and, ultimately, three exceptional appointments.

We are delighted to introduce:

Board renewal is only one part of Aberlea’s broader modernisation. The organisation has also commenced an Executive restructure — co-designed with Leading — to strengthen capability and ensure the Board can focus on oversight and stewardship rather than operational involvement.

Nicole is currently Deputy Chief Operating Officer at Scope (Aust), one of Australia’s largest and most respected disability service providers, where she oversees governance, quality, and operational performance across more than 300 Supported Independent Living homes and 4,000 staff. She brings more than 20 years of senior leadership experience across the health, aged care, and disability sectors, with a background that uniquely combines clinical expertise and board-level strategic insight.

A registered nurse by training, Nicole has previously held senior executive roles with Calvary Health Care, Australian Unity, Jewish Care Victoria, Sapphire Care, and BlueCross, where she led large-scale residential aged care, home care, and development portfolios. Her experience spans mergers and acquisitions, growth strategy, commissioning, and governance reform across complex national organisations.

The Board’s selection panel was unanimous in its support of Nicole’s appointment, highlighting her:

✅ Exceptional governance, risk, and strategic leadership capability

Angela is currently Head of People, Marketing and IT at Multiworks, a national infrastructure and civil construction company delivering major energy and transport projects across regional Victoria. She brings more than 20 years of senior executive experience across people and culture, corporate services, communications, and strategy — including leadership roles with Top Shelf International (ASX), Symal Group, Fulton Hogan, and Penske Australia & New Zealand.

Her expertise spans governance, workforce strategy, and organisational transformation, with a proven record of guiding large enterprises through cultural change, mergers and acquisitions, and executive transitions. Angela is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors Foundations of Directorship and holds a Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management and a Bachelor of Social Work.

The Board’s selection panel was unanimous in its support of Angela’s appointment, highlighting her:

🌟 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝘀 (𝗣𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁) 🌟

We’re delighted to introduce Maria Collins, who has been recommended by the Aberlea Board for appointment as a Director, pending formal ratification at our upcoming AGM.

Maria is currently Director of Performance Improvement and Acting Chief Executive Officer at Yea and District Memorial Hospital, a rural health service providing acute, aged care, and community health services. She brings more than 25 years of experience in public and regional health, having worked across organisations including Austin Health, Northern Health, Mercy Health, and DPV Health.

Throughout her career, Maria has led significant quality and governance reforms, guided hospitals through multiple accreditations, and overseen major safety and risk improvement initiatives. She is also a VCAT Member (AHPRA Nursing Registrations), providing expertise in clinical governance and regulatory oversight at a systems level.

The Board’s selection panel was unanimous in its support of Maria’s appointment, highlighting her:

✅ Warm, collaborative leadership style
✅ Insight into the challenges and opportunities facing aged care
✅ Proven ability to connect clinical excellence with strategic oversight

Outside of work, Maria is passionate about continuous learning and mentoring emerging leaders in health. Her warmth, experience, and practical leadership style make her a tremendous addition to the Aberlea Board.
