"You need the human for the judgment. You need the human to apply the ethics, and you need the human to understand the broader situational awareness picture." – Mark Baines, Principal

We are back with this week’s episode, where Allen Dorsey sits down with Mark Baines who brings deep experience across digital systems, military strategy, and the Defence and security sector to explore what happens as AI becomes increasingly embedded in how organisations operate and make decisions, and where the human remains indispensable.

They discuss why human judgement, ethics, trust and leadership remain critical when decisions need to be made in complex and uncertain environments, and what the military experience can teach us about navigating an increasingly AI-enabled world.

If this is a question you’re thinking about too, Mark explores it further in his recent paper, Human advantage in the age of AI and autonomy, looking at why the future of AI is less about replacing people and more about how technology can augment human judgement and expertise.

Across Nous, we marked Wear It Purple Day with our favourite purple outfits and snacks, but also most importantly with conversations about what helps people feel seen, supported and able to be themselves.

Our Purple Perspectives Wall invited Nousers to reflect on identity and belonging. The responses highlighted the power of listening to help create workplaces and services where people do not need to leave parts of themselves behind.

Thank you to everyone who joined the conversation and helped make support for LGBTQIA+ young people visible.

Everyone is looking for certainty when it comes to AI. The challenge is that certainty may never come.

In the latest episode of A Little Bit of Nous, Allen Dorsey sits down with Nous Principal Michael Rathjen to discuss one of the biggest questions facing leaders today: how do you make decisions about AI when the technology, and its implications, are evolving so quickly?

Michael shares a simple but powerful analogy: the javelin arc. You don't need to know exactly where the javelin will land, but you do need to know the direction you're aiming.

Tune in to hear why AI is about more than technology, how leaders can navigate uncertainty, and why having a clear direction may matter more than having a clear destination.

This week, Nous will celebrate Wear It Purple Day by creating space for reflection and connection across our offices.

Wear It Purple Day matters because LGBTQIA+ young people deserve to know they are seen, valued and supported every day in the places and systems that shape their lives. This year’s theme, Colours of Courage, reminds us that courage can look like speaking up, standing beside someone, asking for support, or simply having the freedom to be yourself.

We look forward to marking the day together and continuing the conversations that help build safer, more inclusive communities.

Across Australia, Nousers marked NAIDOC Week 2026 by attending local events, supporting First Nations businesses, connecting with community, and celebrating the theme Fifty Years of Deadly. From attending community events and cultural performances to exploring First Nations art, storytelling, and businesses, our teams took time to recognise the achievements, cultures, and enduring contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Across our offices, we also showcased products from First Nations-owned businesses, creating opportunities to connect with stories and culture.

NAIDOC Week matters deeply to many of the First Nations colleagues, partners, organisations and communities who guide our learning. It is a reminder that celebration must sit alongside listening, respect, and ongoing relationship. As we close out our workplace celebrations, we remain committed to listening, learning, and building stronger relationships year round.
