Seed saving (Part II) - I’m saving seed from open pollinated, heirloom seed sources, and the strongest mother plants for ensuring hardy genetics.

Fun - sort of zen, but also monotonous.

Fall gardens and winter crops are happening NOW! A majority of the commonly grown fall and winter crops are low maintenance - so once you plant you don’t have to trellis, steak, tie, or train. Lower temperatures and nicer weather make fall gardening a winning combination!

Indoor consultations available too for anything you are interested in learning more about and creating a personalised plan for your space.

Have a grow light, pots, aquaponics, hydro beds, or any other indoor ambitions? We can grow mad herbs / vegetables / medicinal plants over the winter to keep you and your family well fed and protected by growing some immune boosting plants! I have experience with aquaponics from my time working with Virginia Cooperative Extension, and grew Basi, Bok choi, and butter crunch lettuce; as well some other plants like strawberries in a tower with levels of rocky geolite substrate and a recycled nutrient solution.

If you love fish and veggies; and have some extra dosh hanging around your savings (despite the gnarly portfolio harming recession taking place…)

THEN LETS TALK AQUAPONICS (or hydroponic options). I’m very passionate about growing fish in a symbiotic cycle with veggies; one feeding the other and both are highly nutritious. You can even grow some rad species of fish, depending on your tank size and the scale of your aquaponics operation. Trout, Talapia, Catfish, Small Mouth / LM Bass, Snakehead, and occasionally salmon (needs larger tanks than the above mentioned species..) Great for dry climates and can be done indoors ; outdoors ; in high tunnels ; even in your garage, spare room, or basement - it’s adaptable and very customisable.

Hope that gets you guys excited!

Garlic - a yum culinary and medicinal bulb Definitely call/message ASAP if you want a garlic bed installled.

** Last planting date for garlic is late November **

Indoor plants - culinary and medicinal herbs, pots, porch pots, window pots, custom fittings, custom design. Call for a consultation.

Microgreens - I grow sunflower sprouts and many other brassica sprouts for nutrient dense, tasty microgreens. Crunchy, healthy, and packed with flavour. I’ve helped clients with their micro green dreams successfully, and have sources for bulk microgreen seed; grow trays; growing medium, etc.

Having grown my own mixrogreens for the past 10 ish years I am very familiar with the best techniques and can help you if you book a consultation + planning/procurement. Call or message!

Mushrooms - Growing your own culinary mushrooms is exciting, educational, and a skill I believe everyone should learn. Super interesting - plus it’s kid friendly / pet friendly and only requires a small sanitised closet. I have many years experience with mushrooms; and grow them indoors, outdoors, and forage them often. Set up a mushroom consultation and demystify the mushroom!

Indoor medicine - with supplemental lighting and or utilising grow tents, ventilation, fans and temperature control. Organic substrate living soil, 15-25 gal grow bags / poly pots. Organic soil building microbiology management via building soil health and biology. Also have experience with the other side of the coin; pH balanced synth nutrient applications. Either / or / plus the best method = combining various tactics to ensure healthy plants and nice yields! Set up a consultation today I am an experienced grower in wel lit, ventilated tents, and have experience with anything you want to grow indoors.

Aquaponics - FISH AND VEG. Full circle production process that’s great for anyone with limited space outside, and well adapted to dry areas / drought tolerant. Confusing- yes definitely at first hearing about this wacky wizardry- but don’t worry •••

Yes that’s me- I offer consultations to help plan, map, budget, and even help / do construction of a home sized aquaponics system; and will help you figure out specifics with your water pump and flow rate, upper tank, lower fish tank, fish waste converter, nutrient converter, spare pumps, filtration mechanism, and growing medium selection based on your growing goals! A great, low energy consumption investment that will improve your future as well as contribute to sustainable growing methods.

Hydroponics - Many different techniques and set ups to do hydroponic veg or other medicinal plants. Floating beds, inorganic rocky substrate with constantly recirculating (water soluble so synth nutrients), split pvc or gutter tables with recirculating wsp nutrient solution, tower hanging type set ups… So many options and not as expensive to set up as most people think. I offer consultations to help plan, map, budget, and even help / do construction.

The best time to build your dream indoor garden is on the cool season - construction is always easier to do in the winter - With an indoor setup of some kind, you can grow from November through April when many growers are in dormancy.

Here are some photos that illustrate the long and tedious process of seed saving.

Saving your own seed, processing them, keeping the safe (basements are best), and planting them the following year is super fun to me. There are many factors to consider when to harvest a plant for seed. Dry, brown, and easily broken apart in your hand - that’s what you want. Also open pollinated / heirloom seeds are better since they “breed true.” I avoid saving from Hybridised plants as their F2 generation typical looses the vigor- and your yield will suffer by about 30%.

Armillaria mellea / “the honey mushroom” (I believe that’s what this nice cluster of fungi is!) - A totally plant pathogenic/ destructive fungi, that is also considered a choice edible, and is also bioluminescent! Armillaria sp. checking all boxes of a bad, rad, fung. Found on a severely decomposed oak stump in late summer.

As a passionate forager and mycology enthusiast - I have been readapting to our local Mid Atlantic / Dmv/Va flora after an extensive period in the tropics. I genuinely feel like I have a passion for finding useful, edible, and often highly medicinal plants and fungi here, as I grew up around these species. Deciduous forests are so diverse and offer a wide variety of healing plants - that change seasonally.

To keep our scope of horticultural services diverse, we at we offer local plant / mushroom identification courses, walks, educational information, cultivation consultation, and mush more pertaining to all your wild crafting dreams.

Check out my website for more information about how to make an appointment - all skill levels welcome - “Plant Walks” malcolmsmicrofarms.com.
