🍽️ 12,000 meals, funded entirely by retired laptops. Here is how a routine IT refresh became something far bigger. 👇

In December, Early Childhood Management Services (ECMS) made a decision that more organisations should consider. Rather than treating their ageing laptop fleet as a disposal cost to be cleared as cheaply as possible, they asked a better question: what is the most responsible, most valuable thing we can do with this equipment at the end of its life? 🤔

💻 We worked with ECMS to securely decommission the retired laptops across every one of their early childhood centres in Victoria. That meant a full chain of custody from the moment each device left site, certified data destruction on every data-bearing asset, and complete documentation back to their team. 🔒 For an organisation entrusted with the care of young children and the information of thousands of families, that assurance was not optional. It was the whole point.

But the part we are proudest of is what happened to the value locked inside that old equipment. Instead of it disappearing into a recycler's margin, we recovered it and donated the full amount to SecondBite, one of Australia's leading food rescue organisations. 🥗 That contribution funded 12,000 meals for Victorians experiencing food insecurity.

Think about what that represents. ♻️ Equipment that had reached the end of its working life, that most organisations would have paid to make disappear, instead protected sensitive data, stayed out of landfill, and put 12,000 meals on the table for people doing it tough.

This is what the circular economy looks like when it is done with intent. 🌱 It is not a slogan or a line in a sustainability report. It is a series of deliberate choices: to handle data properly, to recover value rather than destroy it, and to direct that value somewhere it does real good.

💡 There is a lesson here for every business, school, council, and government agency facing a hardware refresh. Your end-of-life IT is not just a security risk to be managed or a problem to be offloaded. Handled properly, it is an opportunity to protect your organisation, reduce your environmental footprint, and create genuine community impact, all from the same project and often at no extra cost.

🙏 Our sincere thanks to the team at Early Childhood Management Services for their leadership and for choosing to do this the right way, and to SecondBite for turning recovered value into meals for the people who need them most.

📩 If your organisation has a hardware refresh on the horizon and you want to understand the secure, sustainable, and socially responsible path through it, we would be glad to have that conversation.

Did you know? 💡

As Australian businesses continue to upgrade their technology more frequently, the volume of retired IT equipment is increasing at a rapid rate. With this shift, secure data destruction has become more critical than ever.

Even when devices are no longer in use, they can still contain highly sensitive business and customer information. If not properly managed, this data can pose serious risks including breaches, compliance issues, and reputational damage.

That is why protecting information should remain a priority throughout the entire IT lifecycle, even after devices reach end of life ♻️

Real sustainability is often measured through action, transparency, and documented outcomes 🌱

As organisations place greater focus on environmental accountability, access to accurate e-waste data is becoming increasingly valuable. Reporting on landfill diversion, material recovery, and carbon impact helps turn recycling activity into meaningful business insight ♻️

Through structured ESG reporting, environmental performance can be clearly tracked, documented, and communicated with confidence.

Did you know Australia’s e-waste footprint is growing every year 🌏

The average Australian household generates around 20kg of e-waste annually. While small devices may seem insignificant on their own, collectively they contribute to a significant environmental impact that cannot be ignored.

Responsible recycling helps reduce landfill waste and recover valuable materials, supporting a cleaner and more sustainable future 🔐💡

Love this!

At Bondi Beach, broken surfboards have been reshaped into benches, a great way to keep them out of landfill and a super cool art installation.

Imagine what we could do with that idea in Agnes Water and 1770.

Benches along the foreshore made from retired local boards. Boards that have actually been ridden here, each one with its own story, maybe even marked with who rode it or where it’s been.

It’s not just recycling, it’s a way to showcase our surf culture, support local makers, and create something that feels genuinely “us.”

Could be something pretty special if done right.

Happy Earth Day 🌏

Earth Day is a reminder that caring for our environment starts with the choices we make every day. Protecting natural resources, reducing waste, and making more sustainable decisions all play an important part in creating a healthier future. 🌱

Even small actions can make a meaningful difference, whether it is recycling responsibly, reusing where possible, or being mindful of what we consume.

Today is an opportunity to reflect, act, and support a cleaner planet for future generations. 💚

Did you know? 💡

E-waste is growing due to rising demand for electronics, shorter device lifespans, and fewer repair options. As more devices reach end of life, materials such as metals, plastics, batteries, and circuit components need proper handling and recycling. ♻️

Recovering these materials helps conserve valuable resources, supports reuse, and keeps unnecessary waste out of landfill.

E-waste contains components that require careful handling due to hazardous materials such as lead, mercury, cadmium and lithium batteries ⚠️

If not managed correctly, these substances can pose risks to both the environment and human health which is why responsible recycling is essential.

Proper e-waste management ensures these materials are treated safely through approved recycling pathways.
