Ever wondered why the inside of a bourbon barrel looks burnt?

That char is there for a reason. Before bourbon goes into the barrel, the new oak is fired on the inside, creating a charred layer that helps the whiskey pick up colour and flavour as it ages.

It’s a big part of where those familiar vanilla, caramel, spice and oak flavours come from.

The first step in tasting whiskey isn’t nosing or sipping. It’s appearance.

The appearance of a whiskey can tell you more than you might think. Colour can offer clues about cask type, age and style, while clarity and the way it moves in the glass can hint at texture and mouthfeel.

It’s not about overcomplicating the pour. It’s about noticing what’s already there.
