My new book is now available to order.

Birth-Rate Crisis asks a simple question:

Why are people in wealthy societies having so few children?

Most explanations focus on housing, childcare and money.

I believe the real cause goes much deeper.

This book looks at changing priorities, family, community, dopamine, history and why previous attempts to reverse falling birth rates have struggled.

I have been studying this question for more than 50 years.

The decline is now happening faster than I ever expected.

Birth-Rate Crisis is available to order now.

I have been thinking about declining birth rates for more than 50 years.

It started when I was a teenager reading about the fall of ancient Rome.

Why would wealthy societies start having fewer children?

That question eventually became part of my PhD research.

And I never really stopped investigating it.

Today, birth rates across much of the developed world have fallen below replacement level.

Governments blame housing, childcare and the cost of living.

I believe the real explanation goes much deeper.

That is what my new book, Birth-Rate Crisis, explores.

It looks at family, community, changing priorities, dopamine and what history can teach us about where this may lead.

It also looks at what might actually reverse the decline.

Pictured here with my co-author, Andrea Pearson, who is visiting from the US.

Andrea brought a very different perspective to the book, as a writer, editor and mother.

This is probably the most important subject I have ever written about.

Birth-Rate Crisis is now available to order.

I'll put the link in the comments.

The Reserve Bank raised rates for the fourth time this year.

Reporters asked the Governor about government spending.

She sidestepped the question.

Households got the rate rise.

Governments got a free pass.

Federal regulation costs the Australian economy around $160 billion a year.

Almost 6% of GDP.

Roughly $14,500 for every household.

Business groups want the cost cut 25% by 2030.

I learned what compliance mistakes cost the hard way.

Our accountant failed to pay just over $1 million in tax.

We found out three years later.

The bill for back taxes, penalties and interest came to almost $3 million.

Jim's Group survived.

A sole trader mowing lawns would not.

I am running for parliament to slash zoning and government meddling.

The Reserve Bank raises rates to slow spending.

Households cut back.

Small businesses cut back.

Governments keep spending.

Then the Reserve Bank raises rates again.

The Reserve Bank blamed energy prices for this rate rise.

We cannot control global oil.

We control our own power prices.

Every mortgage holder now pays for bad energy policy twice.

Once on the power bill.

Once on the home loan.

Four rate rises this year.

The cash rate is now 4.6%.

The highest since 2011.

A family with a $600,000 mortgage now pays $4,368 more a year than in February.

Nobody in Spring Street will feel a thing.

Almost 6% of GDP.

Roughly $14,500 for every Australian household.

A big company absorbs compliance.

A sole trader mowing lawns pays in hours.
