Yellow Arrow Hands on leadership workshops for schools and businesses. We believe leadership is caught not taught

We had a great time with the 8, 9, 11 and 12 leaders at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College, Braybrook last week. The day was full of laughter and games whilst also learning about our own leadership styles, personality types, and how to create positive cultural change. Here's what some of the students had to say:

"This was definitely an experience of a life time and was incredibly enjoyable. The staff made the activities go by so seamlessly whilst ensuring that we all still had fun, engaging and participating at all times."

“I was able to meet new people, and interact with different personalities as well as get to know others better and their style of leadership.”

My biggest lightbulb moment was...

“Knowing that it's okay to step outside of your comfort zone.”

“During the building blocks activity, it made me understand the importance of listening and considering everyone’s feedback— giving everyone the chance to input— before making a final decision.”

“I realised that it was never awkward to be honest with yourself and others, and it is always important to have integrity, a strong sense of morality as well as communication.”

Last week we had loads of fun with the Braybrook College year 12s at The University of Melbourne. The focus of the session was connection and courage, exploring growing our comfort zones, problem solving and teamwork. Check it out!

Last Thursday we spent the day with the year 12 boarder students at Assumption College, Kilmore. The day was focused around bonding, preparing them to support each other and be leaders in their community. They were given the opportunity to reflect on their personal leadership style and explore how best to work together as a team. As with all our workshops, it was very hands on, with many opportunities for students to step up and challenge themselves, and lots of laughs along the way.

Here is some feedback from the students:

"I enjoyed the icebreakers and the different activities that served as metaphors and examples to put things into a further perspective."
Grace

(My biggest light-bulb moment was) "Realising that to make others feel comfortable you have to step outside your comfort zone too"
Freya

"That there are so many different types of leaders and even if there’s a quiet person in the back, they are still a leader they just view it differently"

"Rachel and Jai were great!"

"Leadership is caught, not taught"

We spent an amazing day with the student leaders from Clonard College Geelong last week to help them gain confidence as leaders, bond as a team and set some goals for next year. We're excited to hear how they go with their roles! Here is some feedback from the students:

"All the work we did in public speaking really opened my eyes to a confidence that was unlocked through it. Another light-bulb moment was when we were asked what our biggest critique was, and almost everyone said themselves, which made me feel like I’m not alone."

"Once our group had the opportunity to discuss current events and fundraisers and how to evolve them into bigger and better ideas, it was really great."

"I enjoyed how genuine the host/presenter was. Especially when touching on the fact that everyone makes mistakes. I also really enjoyed everything we learnt."

"If you don't try, you've already failed"

"Micheal was EXTREMELY nice and so so welcoming and warm. He was funny and made everybody feel safe and comfortable."
Kasey

"When ppl who said they weren’t comfortable with speaking in public got together but in that group I saw some speakers who I already rly admired. Made me realise that everyone is nervous"
Ranumi

How are your student leaders tracking with their goals? Now is the perfect time to take stock and encourage your students to consider how they are progressing and where they might need some redirection.

We visited Clonard College Geelong last week to meet with the student leaders and gave them the opportunity to reconnect with the vision they set at the beginning of the year and chat with their portfolio groups about whether it was still where they were heading or whether it (or they) needed to shift. They left the session feeling re-energised and with a renewed momentum for the rest of the year.

Here is some feedback from the students:

"[I learned] we were to ambitious at the start of the year and we need to scale back to simplicity."

"The different games were fun but also incorporated leadership"

"I enjoyed talking with are portfolio group and realising we want to have more projects"

"It was a good opportunity to be together as a group and reflect o things we achieved and what we want to achieve"

"Can't remember the guy's name running it, but he was fabulous!"

There are so many benefits that come from bringing students from brother/sister schools together. Yesterday, we spent the day with the year 10 leaders from Mater Christi College - Belgrave and St Josephs College. The students were tasked with planning a community event day that would bring all of the students from their respective year levels together. We helped break them into smaller planning groups, with each one responsible for a different aspect of the event. We also played a few hands on problem solving activities to challenge their ability to work together and communicate as a team.

It was a fun and productive day! Here is some feedback from the students:

"I enjoyed that there was a large variety of games rather than content heavy/productive sessions. It was easier to get the most work done in short bursts of time."

"I enjoyed working with our sister school and seeing how we bond and talk with each other"

"I enjoyed all of the games and actually planning somthing that we get to enjoy the end result"

Last Thursday we had the privilege of spending the day with 80 grade 6 student leaders from six Jesuit schools across Australia as part of the Ignatian Youth Conference. The day was very hands-on, with students having an opportunity to learn about their personal leadership style, how to communicate effectively, how to work in a team and what they need (and how they react) when they are placed in pressured situations. We were very impressed with the students, and loved hearing about their vision for the future. Here is some feedback from the students:

"I liked the chance to meet new people and the saying leadership isn't taught but caught. It was fun and I enjoyed and learnt a lot."

"I learned how to be a better leader and overcome hard challenges"

"I enjoyed how everyone felt comfortable and open to talk"

"I learned how to be a respectful listener and listen to others' ideas intently"

"It was amazing"

"I had so much fun!"

A big thank you to Xavier College, Sacré Cœur Glen Iris, Redfern Jarjum College, Saint Ignatius' College Riverview, Saint Ignatius' College Adelaide and St Aloysius' College, Milson's Point for including us in the event, and to Arrabri Lodge for hosting!
