Ever wondered what happens to heavy steel once it reaches the scrap yard?
This is HMS โ€” Heavy Melting Steel.
Once it arrives at Norstar, the HMS is processed through our 2,100-tonne Vezzani shear. ๐Ÿ’ช
The shear uses enormous cutting force to reduce the steel into smaller, more manageable pieces, but itโ€™s not simply about making it smaller.

Steel mills need scrap that can be efficiently handled, transported and charged into a furnace. Processing the HMS into a more consistent size prepares it for the next stage of the steelmaking process.
What you see here is the result.

This processed HMS can now be transported and ultimately melted down to make new steel.

So that steel that has reached the end of its current life?
Itโ€™s not waste. Itโ€™s raw material for the next one. โ™ป๏ธ

When someone is fighting acute myeloid leukaemia, blood transfusions can be a critical part of their treatment.
Research from Melbourne found that around 150 blood donors were required to adequately support one person's complete course of treatment for AML.
Thatโ€™s 150 people who each gave a little of their time to help someone else keep fighting.
And that's the thing about donating blood.
You may never meet the person you're helping.
You may never know their name.
But to them, your donation could mean everything.

Your blood could help someone else's mum, dad, brother, sister, son or daughter.

When we think about where the raw materials for steel come from, we picture a big mine like this. But thereโ€™s a lot more behind getting those materials out of the ground. Roads, railways, power, processing and transport to name a few.

Thatโ€™s why even the scrap sitting in your backyard or garage matters.
That old BBQ.
The rusty mower.
The pile of old fencing.
It might not seem like much, but when households across Australia recycle the steel they no longer need, those small contributions make a big difference.
