The most expensive thing you did last week may have taken four seconds.

A sentence you softened. Feedback you cushioned. A concern you chose not to raise.

We tend to imagine integrity being tested in dramatic moments. More often, it happens in ordinary ones where telling the truth carries a small but visible cost.

Those decisions compound. The underperformance you don’t name this quarter can become the restructure you pay for next year. The concern you swallow becomes the risk nobody flags.

The encouraging part is that integrity rebuilds in small moments too. You don’t need a crisis to practise courage. You need today’s meeting and one sentence you would normally round off.

Pick the sentence now, while it is still cheap.

You made the right decision. Why did it cost you so much?

Two leaders can make exactly the same difficult decision and experience it very differently.

For one, doing the right thing requires an exhausting internal negotiation. For the other, the decision may still be brutally difficult, but the question of who they are has already been settled.

That difference matters to leadership capacity. When qualities such as honesty and courage are practised consistently, leaders spend less energy renegotiating their own integrity every time pressure arrives.

The prize isn’t moral superiority. It’s quiet, and the capacity that quiet frees up.

This is one of the ideas I explore in What Sits Underneath.

There are two ways to get results from people. Only one of them compounds.

Are you serving the work and the people, or using the work and the people to serve yourself?

The distinction matters commercially. Compliance can get you the work as specified and on time. Genuine ownership produces people who solve problems you never assigned them, stay through difficult seasons and grow into the leadership bench you would otherwise have to buy.

Servant leadership isn’t about abdicating responsibility or becoming softer. It’s about using your authority to make people more capable rather than simply more compliant.

So, this week: are you serving, or using?

I explore this more deeply in What Sits Underneath.

The most expensive thing in your organisation may be the effort of being two people.

Under sustained pressure, which version of you shows up at work? And is it the same person your family sees when nobody is performing?

Almost nobody deliberately chooses to create a split between who they are and how they lead. It accumulates slowly. But maintaining different versions of ourselves takes energy. Attention becomes fragmented, difficult conversations become harder and decisions carry more weight than they should.

That’s why, in What Sits Underneath, I treat wellbeing not simply as comfort, but as integration. Who you are, what you value, what you stand for and what you do belong together.

If you’re carrying two versions of yourself, what is that gap costing you?

“I can’t stand most leadership books. I loved this one!”

Mal Cooke, Director of Neometric, describes the heart of What Sits Underneath as the case that becoming a better leader is very often about becoming a better human first.

Leadership capability, strategy and performance all matter. But underneath them sits the person making the decisions and carrying the responsibility. That deeper foundation is what the book sets out to explore.

Thank you, Mal, for such generous words.

Even a sound strategy can lose momentum when people, priorities and resources are not aligned behind it.

At LCP Global, we use an organisation’s own data to help leaders see where ex*****on is drifting and where greater alignment is needed.

That visibility gives leadership teams a shared picture of what is happening and a clearer basis for action.
