We often view each other through a single lens—focusing solely on a background, a faith, or a title. But the reality is that each of us is a vibrant tapestry of different experiences, roles, and identities. We are neighbors, language speakers, workers, elders, and friends.

This overlap of identities is known as intersectionality. When we look beyond a single label and see the whole person, we create real respect and build a community where everyone feels they truly belong.

At VETASSESS 2026 in Melbourne, one of our own shared a story that speaks for so many of us: arriving with a degree in hand, hitting a wall of red tape, and refusing to wait on the sidelines. From casual worker to Team Leader, from Recognition of Prior Learning to a Bachelor's degree, this is a story of resilience built right here in our community.

This is the same fight behind our Strengthening Communities project. Every workshop, every conversation, every partnership is about making sure no one's skills, story or dignity get locked behind a closed door.

The cost of being the first to change often comes with an unexpected price: sudden isolation. When someone steps out of the mold, those who were once friendly may no longer be able to make eye contact.

Going through trauma is heavy, but facing it entirely alone while the world around you looks away is an entirely different kind of challenge.

True change doesn't happen by staying comfortable. Sometimes, the path to progress requires standing alone so others can eventually follow. If you have ever felt like you are fighting a battle that no one else sees, your courage matters more than you know.
