Mounted behind the front axle line is a highly developed Ford 302ci 5.0-litre Windsor Fuel Injected V8, reportedly producing an impressive 337kW—or approximately 451hp—at the rear wheels. Its performance specification includes AFR Racing aluminium cylinder heads, an upgraded valvetrain and camshaft, Edelbrock 11 EFI system and MSD performance ignition. The combination provides strong throttle response, improved breathing and substantial power delivery throughout the operating range. At idle it produces a deep and aggressive note through its ceramic-coated side-exit exhaust system. Backing the Windsor V8 is a high-performance Tremec five-speed manual transmission and recently replaced heavy-duty clutch. Power is transferred to a customised VL Turbo L*D, selected for its combination of strength, relatively light weight and proven high-performance capability. Four-wheel disc brakes are fitted, with a large Wilwood performance braking system at the front providing the stopping power required for a lightweight vehicle producing more than 330kW at the rear wheels. Tubular upper front control arms and quick-ratio power steering provide accurate steering response and improved suspension control while making the Cobra considerably easier to manoeuvre at lower speeds. Wide custom Simmons alloy wheels fill the muscular guards and provide a suitably purposeful stance, together with the tyre footprint required to transfer the vehicle’s substantial performance to the road.

Configured for both registered road use and club-level performance events, the Cobra is also equipped with a hydraulic handbrake tailored for motorkhana competition. This purposeful addition complements the upgraded suspension, steering, braking and driveline package, creating a versatile performance car equally suited to spirited road driving or club activities.

Inside, the cockpit remains appropriately focused while incorporating several thoughtful refinements. Representing the ultimate factory development of Ford Australia’s locally manufactured supercharged V8 Falcon, this 2016 Ford Falcon FG X XR8 Sprint is Build No. 727 of only 750 examples produced for Australia.

Presented as a one-owner vehicle with just 7,601 kilometres from new, this highly preserved XR8 Sprint is accompanied by its original books and delivery documentation. Combining limited-production exclusivity, factory overboost performance of up to 400kW and sophisticated locally developed chassis engineering, it represents one of the most significant models from the final chapter of Australian Falcon production.

Developed as the definitive performance evolution of the FG X Falcon, the XR8 Sprint was considerably more than a regular XR8 with additional power. Ford Australia applied substantial engine-management, suspension, braking, wheel and tyre refinements, drawing upon decades of Falcon and FPV development to create one final supercharged V8 flagship.

At its heart is Ford Australia’s locally developed 5.0-litre supercharged Miami V8, featuring aluminium DOHC 32-valve architecture, variable camshaft timing and an intercooled Eaton TVS-type supercharger system.

In Sprint specification, the engine produces 345kW at 5,750rpm and 575Nm between 2,220 and 6,250rpm. More significantly, Ford incorporated a factory transient overboost function capable of temporarily increasing output to as much as 400kW and 650Nm for up to approximately 10 seconds when operating conditions permitted.

Fully integrated into the factory engine-management system, overboost continuously monitored operating parameters before releasing the engine’s additional performance under heavy acceleration.

In this example, the supercharged V8 is paired with the highly regarded ZF six-speed automatic transmission. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a limited-slip differential, preserving the traditional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration that defined Australia’s greatest performance Falcons.

Ford Australia undertook a dedicated chassis-development program to ensure the Sprint could properly exploit its additional performance.

Drawing upon the foundations established by the FPV GT R-Spec and GT F, the Sprint retained the Falcon’s double-wishbone front and independent Control Blade rear suspension while receiving revised geometry, reduced spring rates and newly calibrated ZF Sachs monotube dampers.

Rather than simply making the suspension stiffer, Ford softened the spring rates to improve mechanical grip over uneven surfaces. Substantially firmer rebound damping improved body control following bumps, heavy braking and rapid direction changes.

The result was sharper steering response, reduced understeer, greater cornering stability and improved mid-corner adjustability without sacrificing the Falcon’s long-distance ride quality.

Braking performance received an equally substantial upgrade, with the XR8 Sprint inheriting the formidable system developed for the FPV GT F.

Large 355mm x 32mm ventilated front rotors are clamped by six-piston fixed aluminium Brembo calipers, while the rear employs 330mm x 28mm ventilated rotors with four-piston Brembo calipers. All four calipers are finished in distinctive Sprint-specific semi-gloss gold.

This represented a significant advance over the regular FG X XR8’s four-piston front and conventional single-piston rear arrangement. The larger ventilated rotors provided greater thermal capacity, while the rigid multi-piston calipers delivered firmer pedal feel, improved modulation and strong resistance to fade during repeated high-speed use.

The Sprint rides on model-specific 19-inch Panther Black alloy wheels in a staggered configuration, measuring 8 inches wide at the front and 9 inches at the rear.

They were fitted from new with Pirelli P Zero tyres measuring 245/35 R19 front and 265/35 R19 rear, together with a full-size alloy spare wheel. Ford developed the suspension calibration around the Pirellis’ higher grip level, improving steering response, traction, cornering stability and braking performance.

Externally, Ford deliberately kept the XR8 Sprint relatively restrained. Its aggressive FG X styling was complemented by a Silhouette Black roof, black exterior mirrors, black headlight bezels, Panther Black alloy wheels, black quad exhaust outlets and a discreet black rear lip spoiler.

Further identifying features include a unique hockey-stick side stripe, Sprint badging, revised front fog-lamp surrounds, Sprint scuff plates and individual build-number identification mounted on the engine.

Inside, the Sprint received leather and Lux Suede front seats with Sprint embroidery, unique trim and instrumentation graphics, together with a distinctive automatic shifter assembly and surround.

Equipment includes dual-zone climate control, premium audio, satellite navigation, SYNC 2 connectivity, an eight-inch touchscreen, reversing camera, parking sensors, cruise control and an electrochromatic rear-view mirror.

Its provenance is supported by the retention of its original books and delivery documentation, important inclusions for collectors seeking highly original examples of Ford Australia’s final performance models.

SUMMARY:
Representing one of the most significant American performance cars of the 1980s, this 1986 Buick Grand National combines the model’s sinister factory all-black presentation with its legendary turbocharged and intercooled 3.8-litre V6.

The 1986 model year was a turning point for the Grand National, introducing a factory air-to-air intercooler that transformed Buick’s turbocharged V6 into one of the most formidable American performance engines of its era. Factory rated at 235hp and 330 lb-ft of torque, the intercooled Grand National recorded sub-14-second performance in period testing, with Car and Driver completing the quarter-mile in 13.9 seconds.

At its heart is Buick’s LC2 231ci/3.8-litre 90-degree V6, featuring a cast-iron block and cylinder heads, 3.800-inch bore, 3.400-inch stroke and 8.0:1 compression ratio. Rather than relying on traditional large-capacity V8 power, Buick combined a Garrett turbocharger, sequential electronic fuel injection, distributorless electronic ignition and sophisticated electronic engine management to produce enormous low and mid-range torque from just 3.8 litres.

Central to the 1986 development was the new factory air-to-air intercooler, positioned between the Garrett turbocharger and engine to reduce intake-charge temperatures before combustion. Cooler, denser intake air allowed Buick to safely extract substantially greater performance under boost, increasing output from the previous year’s 200hp to 235hp and establishing the intercooled architecture that made the 1986 and 1987 Grand Nationals legendary.

Documentation supplied with the vehicle refers to an engine specification incorporating TRW forged pistons, ARP rod bolts and studs, an H210/205 camshaft and an upgraded MAF sensor.

These upgrades would provide a strengthened internal foundation while allowing the car to retain the Grand National’s largely factory-style appearance and unmistakable turbocharged character. Without full documentation, no claim is made regarding the engine’s current internal specification or power output. Prospective purchasers are encouraged to review the accompanying documentation and independently assess the vehicle’s mechanical specification.

Power is transferred through GM’s 200-4R four-speed automatic overdrive transmission, particularly well suited to the considerable torque produced by the turbocharged V6. With a 2.74:1 first gear for strong acceleration and a 0.67:1 fourth-gear overdrive for relaxed highway cruising, the transmission complemented the Grand National’s unusual combination of serious straight-line performance and everyday usability.

Braking is provided by 10.5-inch front disc brakes and 9.5-inch rear drums, assisted by Buick’s distinctive Powermaster electro-hydraulic brake-assist system. Rather than relying solely upon conventional engine manifold vacuum, the Powermaster used an electric motor, hydraulic pump and pressurised accumulator to provide braking assistance—a particularly relevant engineering solution for a turbocharged engine operating under positive manifold pressure while on boost.

The Grand National’s chassis was also more purposeful than its Regal origins might suggest. Factory specification included Buick’s Gran Touring performance suspension, fast-ratio power steering, independent front suspension and a coil-sprung live rear axle located by a four-link arrangement.

This example has subsequently been lowered on King Springs, giving it a more purposeful stance while retaining the fundamental factory G-body suspension architecture.

Visually, few American performance cars are as instantly recognisable. Buick’s decision to almost completely black out the Grand National created the menacing appearance that earned it the enduring “Darth Vader” nickname. Black paintwork, blacked-out trim, front air dam, rear spoiler and distinctive Grand National wheels transformed what began life as a conservative Buick Regal into one of the most intimidating American performance cars of the decade.

The body and paintwork remain faithful to the car’s factory appearance, presenting with various touch-ups and age-related imperfections consistent with its age and use. Importantly, it has not been visually transformed into a heavily modified street or drag car, retaining the understated appearance that makes an authentic Grand National so distinctive.

Inside, the car retains its highly recognisable factory Grand National interior, presenting in particularly clean condition. Two-tone seating with distinctive GN identification, model-specific trim and Buick’s unmistakably 1980s instrumentation create a cabin every bit as characteristic as the black exterior.

Factory equipment including power steering, air conditioning and power windows reinforces the unusual combination of luxury and performance that separated the Grand National from more conventional muscle cars.

This example was imported into Australia under Import Approval No. 105726/7 and was previously registered in South Australia. It is offered with a large collection of brand-new spare parts accumulated by the owner, who had planned to return the car to concours-level condition. These parts represent a valuable inclusion for its next custodian.

The car is being offered from one of Australia’s largest Buick collections.

Presented in largely factory-style configuration, this 1986 Grand National offers an appealing balance of authenticity, performance and usability.
