And by December, the good tradies are booked or tied up somewhere else.

Worth asking now:

✔️ Do I have enough qualified people?
✔️ What if someone drops out?
✔️ How long would it take to replace them?

Easier to sort now in October than December.

A bad hire costs you money 💰

Depending on the size of your business ... this can affect you substantially.

But the real damage usually comes later ...

The extra supervision. The mistakes. The frustration from your good people. The time you spend fixing things that shouldn’t need fixing.

And eventually … you have to go back to the drawing board and hire again.

Getting someone into the seat is the easy part. The hard part is getting the right person to fill that seat.

I’ve been doing something a little different lately. Getting out from behind the screen and actually talking to business owners.

Walking in. Listening. Asking questions. Having proper conversations 💬

And I keep hearing the same things.

The applicants are there.
The right ones are harder to find.
Costs matter.
Good people are stretched to breaking point.

And nobody wants to make a bad hire and be back at square one six months later.

It’s a good reminder that you can spend all day looking at data and trends but sometimes the best way to understand what businesses are dealing with is to simply ... go and talk to them.

Human connection still works.

We’re more connected than ever. But are we actually connecting?

Last week, I went door knocking around Tullamarine and had some really good conversations.

And it reminded me how different it feels when you’re actually standing in front of someone.

You see their reaction.
Hear their tone.
Have a proper conversation.

You get the little things that you just don’t get through a screen.

Technology is brilliant. I use it every day. You are probably using it right now to read this post.

But there’s still something pretty special about talking to another human being.

HUMAN CONNECTION STILL WORKS.

And maybe we could all use a little more of it. ❤️

Today I quit LinkedIn.

Okay… not literally. 😂

But I did get off my computer & knock on some doors around Tullamarine.

And honestly, I loved it!

I had some really great conversations with people about their businesses, their teams and the frustrations they’re having with recruitment.

It reminded me that sometimes we make things way more complicated than it needs to be.

Get out. Talk to people. Listen.

Mental health at work isn't just an HR issue.

And it's definitely not solved by putting an EAP number on the wall.

The way work is managed can create genuine psychosocial risks.

Think:
👉 Unrealistic workloads
👉 Poor communication
👉 Workplace conflict
👉 Bullying or harassment
👉 Lack of support
👉 Unclear roles and expectations
👉 Constant pressure to be available

Australian businesses have responsibilities to identify and manage psychosocial risks in the workplace.

And for small businesses, there's another important change to know about: the right to disconnect has applied to small business employees since August 2025.

The bigger point? Good workplace mental health starts with how you actually run the business.

Clear expectations.
Reasonable workloads.
Good leadership.
Addressing poor behaviour.
Having the uncomfortable conversations when they're needed.

Because sometimes the employee isn't the problem. Sometimes the workplace is.
