When you sit down to ask someone about their story, you never know where the thread of the conversation will take you.

When I first interviewed Jade Carberry of First National Real Estate Melton I thought we were going to be talking about her charity work in the local community.
But as we chatted, I realised the heart of the story was actually in her and her husband’s long standing connection to Melton.

Justin Carberry is a third generation Melton resident and his grandfather was the town’s first Shire Engineer, responsible for designing much of the town.
Justin and Jade carry on his legacy today through their passion for the area and the families that choose to call Melton home.

Jade and Justin were one of the seven business owners that FARMWALKER FILMS and I interviewed for City of Melton’s series on Melton Town Centre’s traders.

Can you truly call yourself a Melburnian if you've never ordered the corned beef hash or French Toast at Auction Rooms, North Melbourne?

The large beams and open spaces of the former WB & Ellis auction rooms is a Melbourne hospitality institution and it is often cited as one of the best cafes in Melbourne.

Can you even call yourself Melburnian if you don't have a happy memory of Chapel Street?

Me? I've shopped at Country Road, went on dates at Caffe e Cucina, seen movies at the Jam Factory and went clubbing at Revolver!

So I had a lot of fun exploring the 'past, present and future' of this iconic street as part of a Australia Conference walking tour with Stonnington City Council.

We kicked off the morning at Prahran Historical Society before winding through Greville Street on the way to Prahran Square (remember when it was an ugly supermarket carpark??).

Then, it was time for hot jam donuts and coffee at the beautiful Prahran Market (because you can’t walk on an empty stomach), before getting the lowdown on what’s next for the precinct from Matt Lanigan at Chapel Street Precinct.

We ended the tour at the glamorous Beverly, a stunning rooftop bar and restaurant with panoramic views across Stonnington and Melbourne.

🚶🏻‍♀️ 🛍️ Being a small business and main streets advocate means that I always enjoy exploring streets slowly, on foot or by bike.

So a highlight of the Mainstreet Australia National Conference was exploring High Street Armadale with Stonnington City Council.

Fashionable High Street thrives with chic boutiques, a lively food scene and stunning heritage-protected Victorian and Federation-style buildings.

Our first stop was Mud Australia’s newest location filled with stylish ceramics and homewares. We had the pleasure of chatting with Shelley Simpson to learn about her inspiring story.

Next up was a visit to , a trailblazer in the Australian fashion industry since 1983. We visited her atelier and studio and admired her beautiful designs on the racks.

Contrast this with new boutique Grace Melbourne Boutique, where owner Ilana Moses has brought coveted international designers to Melbourne.

We wrapped up our tour at the historic King's Arcade, a National Trust-classified building from 1893 that’s beautifully maintained into the 21st century with a gorgeous Parisian style restaurant and bijou shops.

So, I went to visit Jansel today at a local farmers market, to buy her food. Happily, she’d already sold out of her borek, but I did get to try her delicious, handmade kadayifi.

I love that the business I have created gives me the opportunity to support other womens’s business dreams!

Sharing the heart and soul of small businesses is some of the most life-affirming work that I do.

Each person that I talk to has a unique story, but they also tell me the same thing over and over.

“I am passionate about what I do because of the impact that my work has on my community.”

“I get out of bed every day because I’m here to serve others.”

“I love my customers, and the connection and conversations that I have with them.”

I’ve been keeping this project under wraps for a while….so I’m excited to finally be able to share some of the content that I produced for with to promote Melton Town Centre, in the main street of Melton.
