👻 **EQUIPMENT… OR NO EQUIPMENT?**

Over the years we've used all sorts of equipment at the Gaol — K2s, REM Pods, spirit boxes, digital recorders, thermal cameras, SLS cameras, the Estes Method and plenty more.

Some of the results have been really interesting, and sometimes they've given us something that makes us stop and think.

Yes, we use equipment on our tours, but we also really encourage people to put it down and just sit for a while.

Listen.
Feel the room.
Take in what's around you.

One thing we've learnt from our time at the Gaol is that if you're going to chase every sound you hear around the building, you're going to get pretty tired! 😂

Sometimes it's better to just sit quietly and see what happens.

We've had some of our most interesting experiences when we've taken away the equipment and simply relied on our own senses.

So yes, we love the gadgets… but sometimes **you are the best piece of equipment you've got.** 👻

👻 THE KITCHEN — A ROOM WE’RE HAPPY TO LEAVE ALONE 👻

Long before the kitchen at Old Beechworth Gaol became the commercial kitchen it is today, Danni and I would sometimes investigate in there.

And honestly… it was probably the most terrifying room in the Gaol.

There was just something about that room.

It never seemed to feel quite right.

Over the years, we experienced some pretty unsettling things in there.

We’ve been pushed.

We’ve captured EVPs telling us to “GET OUT.”

We’ve had doors suddenly fly open.

A full-bodied apparition has also been reported being seen in the kitchen.

And there were times when the feeling in that room would change so quickly that you could feel the panic rising before you even knew why.

It was the kind of place where you could walk in feeling completely fine… and within minutes, you’d be looking at each other thinking, “Something isn't right.”

The worst part was the feeling that sometimes came over you when you were standing in there.

That sudden sense of being watched.

The feeling that something was right behind you.

And that horrible instinct that tells you perhaps you really should leave.

We’ve investigated some pretty interesting places over the years, but the kitchen always had a different energy.

And Bel is quietly VERY happy that we don't investigate in there anymore! 😂

👻 THE MAN IN THE MIRROR 👻

There’s something in the Mess Hall at Old Beechworth Gaol that has fascinated us for years…

The mirror.

More specifically, the security mirror hanging up on the wall.

Over the years, we’ve had some incredibly experienced and highly respected paranormal investigators join us on our tours. People who have spent years investigating, analysing and trying to find logical explanations for the things they encounter.

And there’s one thing in the Mess Hall that, despite plenty of people trying, nobody has ever been able to completely debunk…

The man in the mirror.

If you watch the mirror closely, there are times when you can see what appears to be a dark shadow moving across it.

Backwards.

Then forwards.

Sometimes it happens quickly. Other times it seems to move slowly across the mirror before disappearing.

We’ve spent years watching it, trying to work out exactly what we’re seeing and where it could possibly be coming from.

Our own theory is that it could be something residual — almost like an imprint of something that has happened there in the past, playing itself out again and again.

But honestly?

We’ve stopped trying to figure it out. 😂

Sometimes you just have to appreciate something for what it is.

Is it a trick of the light?

A reflection?

Something we simply haven't found the explanation for?

Or could we really be seeing a residual image of someone who once walked those corridors?

👻 TABLE TIPPING – WHAT IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING? 👻

Table tipping, or table turning, has been around for a very long time.

It became hugely popular during the Spiritualism movement of the 1850s, when people would gather around a table, place their hands lightly on it and wait to see if it would move, tilt or even lift. For believers, it became a way of attempting to communicate with the spirit world.

Of course, sceptics have questioned it for just as long, with explanations ranging from unconscious movements to deliberate trickery.

And honestly… we still can't explain exactly what happens when we do it. 😂

We are certainly far from experts when it comes to the paranormal. We simply love trying new things, experimenting with different ideas and, most importantly, giving people the opportunity to experience something for themselves.

Table tipping is something we include on our Old Beechworth Gaol tours, and it is definitely one of those experiences that people seem to either LOVE… or absolutely hate! 😂

Some nights, the table barely does anything.

Other nights, it can be an incredible experience, with the table moving, tipping and seemingly responding to questions.

And then there are the people who sit down at the table completely convinced that nothing is going to happen…

Only to find themselves staring at a table that appears to be moving underneath their hands.

We've had some people completely blown away by what they experience.

And then we have the sceptics… 😂

We've had more than one person get so suspicious that they start lifting the table, checking underneath it and looking around for fishing wire!

We can't blame them really — if you haven't experienced table tipping before, watching a table move when nobody appears to be making it move is a pretty strange thing to witness.

That's probably what makes it so interesting.

We don't tell people what they should believe. We simply give them the opportunity to experience it for themselves.

Sometimes it's incredible.

Sometimes it's quiet.

Sometimes absolutely nothing happens.

And sometimes you walk away from the table thinking…

“Okay… how the hell did THAT just happen?” 😂👻

Whatever you believe, table tipping is always one of the experiences that gets people talking long after the investigation is over.

👻 EVPs – The Voices We Can’t Always Explain 👻

If you’ve ever wondered what we mean when we talk about an EVP, it stands for Electronic Voice Phenomena.

An EVP is a voice or sound that is captured on an audio recording but wasn’t heard by the investigators at the time it was recorded. Sometimes they can sound like words, sentences or even responses to questions that were asked during an investigation.

And Old Beechworth Gaol is certainly no stranger to them…

The Gaol is an incredibly audible place. Every little sound seems to travel through those old corridors, which can make investigating there both fascinating and, at times, a little unsettling.

Over the years, we’ve captured some absolutely incredible EVPs.

We’ve had what appear to be direct answers to questions we’ve asked.

We’ve captured footsteps that sound like someone running away from us.

We’ve heard someone apparently talking about sandwiches… because apparently even the spirits get hungry! 😂

And then there are the ones that make the hairs on your arms stand up…

“Help me.”

“Get out.”

And some incredibly chilling screams that, when you hear them played back, make you stop and listen all over again. 😳

There have also been things captured that we probably couldn’t repeat here! 👀

The strange thing about EVPs is that we don’t always hear anything unusual while we’re actually investigating. It’s often later, when we sit down and listen back through the recordings, that we discover something we completely missed at the time.

And honestly, I don’t think there have been many nights at Old Beechworth Gaol where we haven’t captured something that has made us stop and say…

“OMG… WHAT DID WE JUST HEAR?” 👻

Whether you believe EVPs are paranormal, unexplained sounds, or something else entirely, there’s no denying that listening back to some of the recordings we’ve captured over the years can be pretty incredible.

And sometimes… downright creepy. 👻

Over the next few investigations, we’re going to start sharing some of these recordings with you all, so you can listen for yourselves and decide what you think you’re hearing. 🎧👻

👻 One of Our Old Beechworth Gaol Experiences 👻

Danni and I have spent many nights at Old Beechworth Gaol setting up for our investigations, and what always gets us is how different the Gaol can feel from one night to the next.

Some nights, it can feel strangely peaceful. The Gaol is quiet, the atmosphere is calm, and while we’re setting everything up, there’s almost a sense of stillness.

Then there are the nights when everything feels different.

The air feels heavier. The silence seems to have a presence of its own, and you get that unmistakable feeling that you’re being watched.

And we’re not afraid to admit it… sometimes we get the Heebie Jeebies! 😂👻

One night that really stands out to us was just a normal evening getting ready for a tour. It had been a stormy sort of night. The rain had passed, but every now and then lightning would flash through the windows, briefly lighting up the long corridor before everything disappeared back into darkness.

The air felt different that night. It was hard to explain… it just felt weird.

We were almost finished setting up, with just the last piece of equipment to put in place, when suddenly…

THE KITCHEN DOOR FLEW OPEN! 😳

And when we say flew open, we mean it opened with some serious force!

Well… after absolutely jumping out of our skin 😂, we decided that perhaps a little fresh air was needed and promptly left the Gaol to collect ourselves.

Once we had calmed down enough to go back inside, we went straight back to the kitchen to try and work out what had happened.

And to this day, we still cannot figure it out.

What caused that door to fly open with that much force?

We checked everything we could think of, but there was no obvious explanation.

Was it the wind? Something mechanical? A perfectly timed coincidence?

Or was something in the Gaol letting us know we weren’t alone?

A LIFE BEHIND THE WALLS — KEVIN BIRD

Kevin Bird's story is one of crime, imprisonment and a number of encounters with Victoria's prison system, eventually bringing him to Beechworth.

Every prisoner had a story. This is one of them.

The Separate and Silent System at Beechworth Gaol
When Beechworth Gaol opened in 1865, it followed the strict Separate and Silent System — a method designed to reform prisoners through isolation, discipline and silence.

Prisoners were kept apart and forbidden from communicating with each other. When moved around the gaol, some prisoners wore heavy calico masks to prevent them from seeing and recognising one another, adding to the sense of isolation.

Even something as simple as a whistle was forbidden. Whistling became one of the ways prisoners could secretly communicate with each other through the corridors, and those caught doing so could face punishment.

During our investigations at the old gaol, we have experienced some fascinating moments connected to this part of its history. On our last investigation, during an EVP session, we captured a whistle that we would like to share with you.
