It’s Friday afternoon. This is your official reminder to close the laptop properly.

Not half-closed while you check emails on your phone. Not “just one more thing” that somehow turns into another two hours. Actually finished.

There will always be another email, another task and another job that suddenly feels urgent at 4.57 pm. Most of them can wait until Monday.

Your business needs a rested, functioning owner much more than it needs one final exhausted hour of questionable productivity.

Shut it down. Step away. Enjoy your weekend. Monday can look after itself for a couple of days.

If you lost access to your files, software or email tomorrow, what’s your backup plan?

Could your business keep running? Or would your day involve panic, coffee and repeatedly saying, “It has to be here somewhere”?

Client records, financial reports, contracts and payroll information deserve more than crossed fingers.

Check what’s backed up, how often it happens and how you’d recover it. Keep backups secure and separate from the originals, and test that you can actually restore them.

Think about how you’d recover access to your software and email, too. Who would you contact? How would you keep working while they’re unavailable?

“I’m pretty sure it’s all saved somewhere” isn’t much of a backup plan.

A little preparation now could save you a very big headache later.

Still have “do my tax return” on your to-do list? This is your friendly nudge.

If you lodge your own individual tax return, the usual deadline is 31 October. This year that falls on a Saturday, so you have until Monday 2 November 2026 to lodge.

Using a registered tax agent? You may have a later lodgement date, but don’t assume. Check your deadline with your agent.

If you’re planning to use an agent for the first time, engage them before 31 October to find out whether you’re eligible for their extended lodgement schedule.

Get your records together, track down those receipts and give yourself time to get it sorted.

“Hi, we’ve updated our bank details.”

Before you update that supplier record or pay the invoice, put your detective hat on.

A familiar logo, convincing signature and perfectly normal email can still be fraudulent. Looking legit doesn’t make it legit.

Always call to confirm changed bank details using a trusted number you already have on file. Don’t use the number supplied in the email requesting the change.

And if someone is pushing you to pay urgently? All the more reason to pause and check.

A quick phone call could save your business a very expensive headache.

Made a mistake in your business? Quoted the wrong price? Forgot to follow up a customer? Tried something new and watched it flop spectacularly?

Welcome to running a small business. Nobody gets everything right, regardless of their industry, experience or how polished their social media looks.

Fix what you can. Own what needs owning. Learn from it and put a better process in place for next time.

Feeling embarrassed will not solve the problem. Taking action will.

And chances are, other business owners have made the same mistake. They just aren’t posting about that bit.

Friday vibes in October are starting to feel different: the days are getting longer, the weather’s warming up, and hay fever has entered the chat.

If you’ve spent the week sneezing through emails and wondering whether your eyes are itchy or you’re just tired, you’ve earned a proper break.

Close the laptop, head outside, and enjoy some of that extra daylight. Tissues optional. Antihistamines probably not.

Sorry to all the Karen’s who go to Pilates, but unless you are also a tax agent (and a fully registered one) you simply can’t give tax advice.

The amount of time we have had to correct transactions because of clients relying on unregistered advice is frightening.
Those corrections cost time, money, stress and business breakdowns.

Some people might have good intentions but aren’t always right.

Just because you trust them doesn’t mean you can trust their advice. Protect yourself by going to the right source.

Coding your own bank feeds? Take an extra moment to check the GST on each transaction.

Just because you bought something for your business doesn’t mean the purchase included GST. If you claim GST on a transaction that didn’t have any, your BAS could be wrong.

Check the tax invoice and make sure the GST code in your accounting software matches what’s actually on it. If you’re unsure, ask us. “It's a business expense” is not an approved GST coding method.
