It sounds logical right?
More awake time means more tiredness and often better sleep but for babies it often works the opposite way.

When little ones stay awake too long, their bodies release stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. Instead of drifting off easily they can become wired, fussy, harder to settle and more likely to wake overnight.

A well rested baby actually sleeps better than an overtired one.
If naps are short, bedtime is a battle, or your little one seems exhausted but won’t sleep, take a look at their wake windows before assuming they need more awake time.

Sometimes the answer isn’t keeping them up longer, it’s helping them get to sleep sooner.

Is the dummy causing a problem, or is it solving one?

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is parents feeling pressure to ditch the dummy simply because their baby has reached a certain age.

But here's the thing...

Not every baby needs to lose their dummy.

In fact, dummies can be incredibly helpful.

They can:
💜 Provide comfort
💜 Help babies settle
💜 Be a useful sleep association
💜 Even reduce the risk of SIDS in younger babies

The goal isn't to remove the dummy.

The goal is better sleep.

So before you decide it's time to get rid of it, ask yourself:

👉 Is my baby sleeping well with it?
👉 Can they replace it themselves?
👉 Is it working for our family?

Or...

👉 Am I replacing it multiple times a night?
👉 Is it causing frequent wake-ups?
👉 Is everyone exhausted because of it?

If the dummy is helping, there's no prize for removing it early.

If it's becoming a sleep crutch that's no longer serving your family, then it might be time to consider a change.

Sleep isn't about following rules.

It's about finding what works for your child and your family 💜

Most parents focus on what they do at bedtime but the real issue is often when bedtime is happening.

If your little one is fighting sleep, getting a second wind or taking forever to settle, it could be a sign they’re either under tired or overtired before bed.

A bedtime routine doesn’t create sleep, it supports it. The sleep pressure needs to be there first.

Before changing your routine again, take a look at your little one’s daytime sleep and wake windows. Sometimes the smallest tweak can make the biggest difference.

Sleep starts long before bedtime.

If you’re thinking your babies routine needs a little shift, book in a troubleshooting call and let’s fix this 💜💜

Being inconsistent.

And honestly?

I completely understand why.

Your baby is upset.
You're exhausted.
It's 2am.

Giving the dummy back feels like the quickest way for everyone to get back to sleep.

But every time the dummy disappears and then reappears, it sends mixed messages.

Your baby starts thinking: "Maybe if I cry long enough, the dummy will come back."

That's why consistency is so important. Not because we want to ignore our babies.

But because clear, predictable boundaries help them understand what's changed.

If you've decided the dummy is going, commit to the plan.

Support them through it.
Comfort them through it.
Be there for them.

But try not to move the goalposts halfway through.

Most families are surprised by how quickly things improve once everyone is on the same page 💜

You’re not imagining it!

What looks like a burst of energy is often a sign that your little one is actually overtired. When babies stay awake longer than their bodies can comfortably handle, their stress hormones can kick in, making them seem wired, silly, restless or even harder to settle.

Some common signs of overtiredness:
💜 Zoomies before bed
💜 Fighting sleep
💜 More tears and frustration
💜 Frequent overnight wake-ups

Sometimes the answer isn’t keeping them up longer, it’s helping them get to sleep a little sooner.

A well timed bedtime can make all the difference.

If zoomies or fighting sleep are a constant battle for your child atm comment “BEDTIME” and we will send you a link for free “how can we help” call to get the ball rolling.

Before I start, a little tip...

If possible, I find the easiest time to remove a dummy is either: Before 9 months of age OR After 2.5 years of age

Why?

Because babies under 9 months typically haven't formed quite as strong an attachment to it yet, while toddlers over 2.5 years are often able to understand simple explanations and boundaries around saying goodbye to their dummy.

When it came time for my children to ditch theirs, these were the 4 steps I followed:

💜 Choose a start date and make sure ALL caregivers are on board.

💜 Throw every dummy in the bin.
Trust me on this one. At 2am, when everyone's exhausted, you don't want the temptation sitting in the kitchen drawer.

💜 Support your child through the transition.
Whether that's rocking, patting, cuddling, sitting beside the cot or offering reassurance, remember you're removing the dummy—not your support.

💜 Stay calm and confident.
There may be a few tricky days (or even a week), but consistency is what gets you through to the other side.

What I don't recommend?

Taking it away for one nap, giving it back the next, then removing it again at bedtime.

That tends to create confusion and frustration for everyone involved.

And remember...

Dummy removal doesn't magically teach sleep.

It simply removes a sleep association so your child can learn other ways to settle.

The sleep foundations still need to be there.

Your baby can settle with it... but can't stay asleep without it.

Now before anyone panics, let me be clear:

I don't think dummies are all bad.

In fact, they can be an amazing settling tool, especially in those early months.

The problem starts when your baby becomes dependent on YOU replacing it every time they wake between sleep cycles.

You might notice:
• frequent night wakes
• short naps
• your baby crying until the dummy is replaced
• multiple dummy runs overnight

At that point, the dummy isn't helping your baby sleep independently anymore—it's becoming a sleep association they can't recreate themselves.

That doesn't automatically mean it needs to go.

But it may be time to ask yourself:

"Is the dummy still helping us, or is it creating more work than it's solving?"

💜 Tell me below... how many dummy replacements are you doing overnight?

One of the biggest mistakes we see exhausted parents make is changing everything the moment sleep doesn’t improve overnight.

•Earlier bedtime.
•Different wake windows.
•More feeds.
•Less feeds.
•New settling methods.

Then 48 hours later… another change

The reality is most sleep changes take time. Consistency gives your little one’s body and brain a chance to adjust and show you whether something is actually working.

Before you make another tweak ask yourself, Have I given this enough time?

Sometimes the magic isn’t in doing more, it’s in staying consistent long enough to see the results.

💜 Trust the process.
💜 Stay consistent.
💜 Give it time.

Save this for the next time you’re tempted to change everything after one tough day!

Trust me, I get it 😅

You've finally reached a point where your baby is sleeping better and the thought of changing anything feels terrifying.

But once your baby starts showing signs of rolling, safety needs to become the priority.

The good news?

Transitioning out of the swaddle doesn't have to mean weeks of terrible sleep.

A few things that can help:
💜 Make the change before rolling becomes consistent
💜 Consider a transition suit or sleeping bag
💜 Keep the rest of the routine familiar
💜 Give your baby time to practise moving their arms during awake periods including in the cot!!

Most babies adapt far better than their parents expect.

And while you may see a few unsettled nights, it won't last forever.

Have you already survived the swaddle transition, or are you putting it off?

It’s so easy to get caught up in milestones…
The crawling, walking, talking, sleeping through the night.

But here’s your reminder every child develops at their own pace

Some babies crawl early.
Some skip it completely.
Some talk nonstop, while others quietly take it all in.

One day at school nobody will ask:
💜When did they walk?
💜Were they breastfed or formula-fed?
💜Did they sleep through at 6 months?

What matters most is the love, connection, and memories you’re creating right now

The cuddles.
The messy meals.
The bedtime stories.
The little moments that shape who they become.
