🌟 Stress at work isn’t a bad thing!

⚠️ It’s sustained stress that is.

😴 We need pressure in our roles to save us from boredom. But too much of it, for too long, can result in burnout - which is costly to us, but also the businesses we work for.

⚖️ It’s why we need to learn to balance pressure. Sit in it long enough that we’re performing well in our roles and growing through challenges, but not so long that it’s pushing us over the edge.

👥 As managers or leaders, it’s important to get this balance right for your team.

💪 And as team members, it’s important to recognize that being in moments of pressure is beneficial for your performance, your growth, and your career.

⏳ Just take note if you’re under too much pressure for too long!

🚫 Most of us fall into this trap.

🤔 We think... If I HAD x, y z, then I would DO a, b, c and I would BE successful; a leader; in control of my time.

⏳ I.e. we wait until we have certain things, before we start acting like the person who has them.

🐢 All this does is slow down the achievement of these goals.

🔍 That might be confusing, so let’s look at some examples...

👩‍💼 Let’s say you want to be promoted to a people leader. You might think...
Once I’m promoted (HAVE)
Then I will start taking on leadership tasks (DO)
And be a leader and heard voice at work (BE)

🔄 But what if you flip it?

💡 Then you might think...
I am a leader whose voice is heard (BE)
And so I proactively take on leadership tasks, mentor others and add value wherever I can (DO)
As a result, my promotion came very quickly (HAVE)

🚀 Rather than waiting for something to come to you, start BEING the person who has what you’re seeking.
This means... think like they would think; talk like they would talk; act like they would act.

🎯 No matter the goal. Whether it be for a promotion, for more work-life balance, or even to develop a new skill.

🏆 By BEING the person who HAS the goal, the goal will come much faster.

😉It’s probably not what you think.

🚫Many think we need to put our name out there… get up on stage… shout about our work.

💥Building a strong personal brand isn’t about shouting about your work. It’s about having impact.

💬Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response - Viktor Frankl.

💪This concept can be powerful in every aspect of life.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑Be it with colleagues. With partners. With family. With friends.

💥Whenever you are triggered, knowing you have the power to choose how you respond is very empowering.

😟Say you’re in a tense conversation at work. Or someone says something disrespectful.

🙊Or your partner does something to annoy you.

⏸️You could react in the moment, in an emotional way, and likely make the situation worse. Or you could PAUSE. Build the space after the stimulus and choose to respond in a more constructive way.

It’s not easy, but the next time you’re triggered, think ‘Stimulus. Pause. Response’. It may shift how you act.

What’s your Friday answer?

If you’re working on a project, you should always challenge yourself to write down your “Friday answer”. That’s the answer you would give if someone asked you the question: “Based on what you know right now, what’s the answer to the problem you’re trying to solve?” Another word for this is your hypothesis.

Challenging yourself to write this down does a number of things:

1. It means if a stakeholder asks you how your project is going, you can give them a good answer that’s focused on insights vs. a status update on the work you’ve done.
2. It helps you check in on your progress and whether all the work/analysis you’re doing is actually getting you closer to an answer.
3. It can help you reprioritise work. If you realise your Friday answer is almost right but is lacking evidence in a particular area, you can change your focus for the following week to get closer to a well rounded answer.
4. It gives you something to test with your team! Do they agree that this is the best answer based on what you know, or do they have evidence to suggest otherwise?

You should challenge yourself to write down your “Friday answer” at the end of every week! The Monday version of yourself will definitely thank you.
