Flour Dust Now Has a Legal Limit in Australia – Is Your Workplace Ready?

From 1 December 2026, new Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs) will come into force across Australia, changing how workplaces manage airborne contaminants. For food manufacturers and bakeries, the biggest shift is a new legal exposure limit for flour dust: 0.5 mg/m³ (8 hour TWA) – around ten times stricter than the levels many sites have been working to under older guidelines.

That means bakeries, mills and food factories will need to check their air quality, review extraction and ventilation, and make sure PPE and fit testing are up to scratch well before the 2026 deadline. The same WEL update also tightens limits for diesel exhaust, asphalt fumes, wood dust and more, affecting transport yards, road crews and timber workshops.

Important for business to know the proposed new legislation. Here is your chance to provide your comments during this consultation process.

Work from home legislation

Recently the Victorian Government launched a consultation process before introducing new work-from-home legislation to Parliament.

Premier Jacinta Allan has announced the introduction of legislation to enable employees to work from home.

The legislation will enshrine in legislation the right to work from home for at least two days a week for employees who can reasonably do so, across both public and private sectors.

This consultation is not about if there will be legislation, but about the design and implementation. Questions around:

The types and sizes of workplaces that will be covered
How remote work is defined and who qualifies
What rules are fair, practical, and reflect real-world experiences
What’s already working in many workplaces.

Online survey: Open to all individual submissions from employees and employers via Engage Victoria , and

Industry roundtables: Starting September 2025, open to stakeholders, peak bodies and unions.
