Humans of UPPAREL, Episode 4: Jack 👋

Jack’s journey at UPPAREL started on the warehouse floor, sorting textiles and working directly with the materials that move through our facility every day.

The more he saw, the more curious he became about what happened beyond the sorting process and how all the different parts of UPPAREL worked together.

So he put his hand up.

From the warehouse, Jack moved into a coordinator role and continued growing with the business. Today, he’s one of our Partnerships Managers, helping organisations become part of the solution to textile waste.

A great example of where curiosity, initiative and a willingness to learn can take you.

5 things that can’t be recycled at Upparel

Soft toys, wired bras, bags, doonas/electric blankets, pillows & cushions, the most common items we get that we just can’t process.

It’s not that we don’t want them. Mixed stuffing, metal underwire, layered materials, they’re built in a way our recycling stream can’t handle.

Not sure if something’s recyclable? Just ask us in the comments, we’d rather you ask than guess. 💚

UPPAREL has been named a 2026 Australian Good Design Award Best in Class winner in Fashion & Textiles, for UPtex: The End of Single-Use Signage.

The jury said it best: "A commendable solution to plastic signage that transforms textile waste into a valuable resource through a genuinely closed-loop system."

UPtex, our material made entirely from unwanted textiles, replaces single-use plastic signage with a genuinely circular alternative, manufactured onshore at our Melbourne facility.

"Why do I have to pay $35?" 💬 Fair question.

It's not a fee for nothing. It covers transport, sorting, and processing every item. Wearable pieces go to charity partners. The rest becomes UPtex through specialised (expensive) recycling most retailers skip.

We're an independent Aussie start-up, built from the ground up with no financial backing. Every dollar helps us collect, process and recycle more textiles right here in Australia. ♻️🇦🇺

Not everything belongs in a textile collection.

Stuffed toys and decorative pillows can clog our machinery.
Perfume bottles can leak or break and create contamination and safety risks.
Plastic helmets contain hard materials that simply aren’t suitable for textile recycling.

Before sending something our way, check the accepted items list on our website. It helps us recycle more, safely and effectively.

This is what over 11 tonnes of textile waste looks like.

Instead of these textiles ending up in landfill or being sent offshore, we process them locally and give the material another purpose.

This batch alone represents more than 40,000kg of avoided carbon emissions.

Textile waste is a huge problem. Keeping it in circulation is how we start changing it.
