LAST STEP - Focus on your 2017 goals. Break these down into some targets and activities for the next 90 days. This becomes your "Q1 2017 list" or your "By 31st March 2017" list. You can transfer this into a notebook or journal now or move to electronic; perhaps via your calendar or as a to-do list on excel. Experiment with different ways to find what is best for you. Work backwards from your 90 day targets to come up with monthly milestones and a couple of steps you can take or activities you can do each week. Make an appointment with yourself; at least once a month (weekly is better) - to review your progress and review/set new 90 day goals, at least once a quarter - to review and update your 1 year goals, & at least once a year to review and update your 10 year plan !! ENJOY

STEP 5 - Check if there's any extras to add to your 1 Year Goals. Review your 2+ year goals and see if there are any milestones or first steps to get started on in 2017. e.g. if you want to lose 50 kgs in 5 years, then add being at least 10kgs lighter to your 2017 goals. If you want to run a marathon in 3 years, then put running at least 10kms as your 2017 goal. If you want to be a world renowned brain surgeon in 10 years, then add successfully enrolling into a medical degree as your 2017 target. If you want to be a millionaire in 3 years, then put paying off your credit card or repaying an extra $x on your mortgage as a 2017 goal etc........ TADA - YOU NOW HAVE A 10 YEAR PLAN, who knew that was a thing ? :-)

STEP 4 - This is where right and left brain comes together. You'll need 5 fresh pages. Heading for the 1st page is "1 Year - 2017". Next page heading is "2 Years or Earlier - 2018". Then "3 Years or Earlier - 2019", Next is "5 Years or Earlier - 2021", Finally "10 Years or Earlier - 2026". Can you guess where this is going...... ? Every item you brainstormed on your lists now gets written onto one of these pages depending on whether you gave it a 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10. This is where you can write the items as fuller goals now. Write them all down as "I am......" or "I have.......". Give them some more description and depth. Rather than "I am a business owner", make it "I am the owner of a successful, thriving, sustainable, profitable business which provides valuable products to thousands of clients". Instead of "I have new clothes" make it, "I have a wardrobe of flattering, high quality, designer clothes suitable for all occasions".

STEP 3 - Now it's time to exercise some left brain thinking. Put a number next to every item on every page. Give each item either a 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 depending on how many years you think it will take to achieve it. Things you can do straight away get a 1 (e.g. enrol in guitar lessons, get a pet). Things which have lots of steps, or happen progressively might need to be a 2 or a 3 (become an excellent guitarist, have an animal training business). Even things which seem impractical - don't cross them out - give them a 10 (become a world famous guitarist/rock star, be a unicorn breeder).

STEP 2 - Time to exercise your right brain. You can do this with words or pictures, with a list or a mind map, however suits you best. This is a brainstorming exercise to put down everything on your sheets of paper that you'd love to achieve or have. You MUST do this with NO LIMITS on your thinking. Forget about practicality; we'll get to that later. Do this activity like a five year old writes a list to Santa - with excitement, without boundaries, without judgement, without logic. Set yourself 10 minutes and get as much on each sheet of paper as you can. Include things you'd like for yourself and for others. Include the things that might feel a little scary to do but will feel great when you've achieved them. Include "little" things and "big" things. Want to make the best cheese sandwich ever ? - write it down, Always wanted to own a private jet ? - draw a picture of it. GO !

31/12/2016

STEP 1 - Get some separate sheets of paper & write a heading on each. Make up your own headings or use these 5 suggestions; Health & Wellbeing, Happiness, Personal Development & Relationships, Finance, Business or Career.

Here's a simple and effective goal setting process. Today is a great day to spend time on this activity. You can do this in as little as half an hour. Choose a place where you can focus; it can be outside or inside, at home, at your favourite coffee place. You MUST do this with pen & paper though, no typing. Coloured pens or textas are even better if that's your style !
