What happens when the model no longer fits? The world has changed, have our organisations?
Over the last little while, I’ve been paying attention to stories about long-standing service clubs winding down. They’re often framed as a lack of volunteers or changing attitudes to commitment.
I see something else.
These organisations aren’t failing because people stopped caring. It's an example of what happens when structures built for another time struggle to keep up with how people now live, work, and participate.
That pattern doesn’t stop with volunteering.
It shows up in workplaces experiencing disengagement, on boards facing succession challenges, and in community organisations that rely heavily on a few committed people.
The world has changed. Many organisational models haven’t caught up yet.
I’ve written a piece exploring this as a signal, not a judgment, and why decline isn’t inevitable when we bring foresight, power awareness, and participatory design into leadership.

I’d love to know what you’re noticing in your corner of the world.
