"I'll fix that when things settle down."

It's one of the lines I hear often from business owners.

The problem is, things often don't settle down. As soon as one thing is ticked off the list, something else takes its place. The issue you planned to fix never becomes the priority.

Growth doesn't wait for a quiet month. Every pricing decision, new hire, and commitment gets built on the foundation you have now.

That's why the right time to strengthen the foundation is while you're busy. Slowing down now sets the business up to grow well, rather than carrying the same issue into the next stage.

Choose one thing you've been putting off.

Give it your attention this week.

A GP doesn’t hand over a prescription in the first five minutes. There’s a conversation first. Questions, listening, understanding what’s actually going on before anything gets diagnosed.

A session here starts the same way. Before any numbers are reviewed, time is spent understanding what’s actually happening in the business, not just what the last report says.

Diagnosis before direction.
That’s where the real difference gets made.

A feature like this isn’t a standard install. Custom joinery, a specific trade, a timeline that depends on three other trades finishing first.

Bespoke elements are where builds most often run over, because pricing is set early and the complexity only becomes clear once the trades are on site. That gap between quoted and actual is a margin problem hiding in plain sight.

The more custom the feature, the more closely the costing needs to be monitored.

A room like this rarely comes from the first draft. It’s the third revision, the fabric swatch has changed twice, and the client wants to see three more options before committing.

All of that time is real, and most design fees are quoted before anyone knows how many rounds it’ll actually take. The gap between the flat fee and the hours it took to get here is where a lot of interior design margin quietly disappears.

Getting the room right and getting paid for the time it took aren’t always the same outcome.

Every treatment plan extends past the appointment. The home-care products on this shelf are part of the result, not an upsell at the counter.

What often gets missed is whether that side of the business is priced with the same precision as the treatments themselves, factoring in stock, wastage, and what’s actually left after costs are accounted for.

Client care doesn’t stop at the treatment room door. Neither should the numbers.

The treatment room runs like clockwork.
Fully booked, clients well cared for, and results that keep people coming back.

What that calendar doesn’t show: whether each treatment is priced to actually cover the product, the time, and the room it uses, or just close to it.

A full book proves demand.
Profit per treatment proves the business is working.

The mood board’s built, the pitch deck’s polished, the retainer’s signed. That part of the job comes naturally.

What’s harder to see clearly: whether that retainer actually covers the hours it takes once revisions, extra rounds, and out-of-scope requests are factored in.

Great creative work should also be profitable work.
Worth checking both.

Every angle on this build was worked out before the first brick went down. Where the light falls at 4 pm. How the deck meets the treeline.

Ask what the same project actually returned after variations, delays, and site costs were factored in, and the answer usually takes longer to find than the design did. Job costing on a build like this often happens after the fact, if it happens with any precision at all.

The design decisions were made on purpose.
The margin should be too.

Profitable on paper. Panicking about the bank balance. Both can be true at once, and the gap between them is where the panic comes from.

Profit and cash are not the same thing. You can make money and still run short, because cash lands when a client pays, not when the job was invoiced.

Check both, separately, every month. One number tells you if the business works. The other tells you if you can pay everyone this Friday.

If you’ve never separated the two, that’s where the expensive surprises come from.

If that sounds familiar, a Strategy Call is where we start. 20 minutes, no cost, just what’s going on and what to do about it.

Let’s talk about why BAS time feels so stressful.

When you invoice a client, part of what they pay you isn’t actually yours. GST sits on top of your price, and you’re holding it for the tax office until you lodge your BAS each quarter. Same with the PAYG you withhold from your team’s wages.

But it all lands in one bank account. You look at the balance and see money, when a portion of it was never yours to spend.

That’s how you can have a great sales quarter and still scramble in the week before lodgement. The GST’s already gone on wages and rent, because nothing was separating it out in the first place.

Give every dollar a job before it lands. Move your obligations into their own account, so what’s left in the main one is genuinely available.

Not everything is a priority, but knowing what’s actually yours to spend is one of the fundamentals.

If untangling that sounds like a good use of 20 minutes, a Strategy Call is where we start. No cost, no obligation.
