Speaking from experience ...

Writers and editors with ADHD often experience exhaustion or burnout. What is this really like and how can it be managed or prevented?

At a recent seminar I attended that was about empathetic editing and a little bit about AI and the ethics (or not) of using it, I got this (in summary): whether we use AI or not in any capacity is a choice, for each person to make. It's not inevitable that it becomes part of life for everyone, or dumbs down the population, or that because of AI stealing their stuff and regurgitating it as AI-produced, human artists no longer have a vocation or job. That's all garbage. A lot of people don't use AI, and AI can't do lots of things that humans can. Particularly, AI will never ever be able to write anything personal or anything experiential or any kind of "memoir" because, well, it has no person or experience or memory or even any intelligence at all. It's just a Large Language Model and that's it.
So, this is from me:
This article is for the kind of people who ring me up and tell me they got AI to write their memoir for them but it now needs to be rewritten to make it more "personal". Or who tell me they gave a few instructions to AI to write a "how to" or self-help book and AI wrote it but, well, it kind of sounds like a robot wrote it and they need someone to "personalise" it so it sounds real. Or who asked AI to "edit" their manuscript and it changed it so it no longer sounds like them. Or who have used AI to write a novel based on their skeleton of a plot but then discover, when I tell them, that when AI writes something for you, you do not own the copyright of "your" book because, guess what, you didn't write it. The AI company owns everything written by AI, and the company now owns whatever you typed into it as well.

"Using AI to write your memoir" is an oxymoron because: a memoir is essentially personal & it's impossible for AI to write anything personal.

So, how many books have we produced "from go to whoa" over the years for our clients? Here they all are here.

You know I love writing blogs. Once I get an idea in my head I'd much rather write that idea out than do the paid work I kind of should be doing. (Don't worry, I'll do some paid work in a moment.) But that's okay because a blog post I need to write because it is bursting out of me never takes long to write. Here's my latest blog based on my own burnouty experiences, which I am sure people who have also suffered from burnout will identify with.

I just updated this article, adding in another section about exhaustion (burnout).

Some of the benefits of being ADHD for those who love writing: hyperfocus, problem-solving many things simulteneously, highly focused on topic

"AI can’t write your memoir for you because a memoir is a personal account of one’s own experiences, including feelings, vulnerability, reflection and your own insight about those experiences. AI has not experienced your experiences or, for that matter, anyone else’s experiences. It has not experienced anything personally, ever. AI can only copy writing that others have written. AI does not have a voice: it can only copy other writers’ voices. AI does not have any insight: it can only copy others’ insights about similar things."
