Practical Ecology Pty Ltd

Practical Ecology Pty Ltd Practical Ecology provides ecological and bushfire consulting services, on-ground indigenous vegetation management, GIS services, education and training.

What began in Melbourne in 1993 with Lincoln Kern (Managing Director) operating as a sole proprietor, has grown into an incorporated company that not only focuses on providing on-ground indigenous vegetation management, but also the provision of ecological and bushfire risk management consultancy services. From our office in Victoria, we provide our services to private landowners, small and large

scale developers and private and public land managers. Our ability to provide an integrated approach to projects is a key strength of Practical Ecology. It has made us one of the leading ecological restoration and consulting companies in south-eastern Australia.

NAWALPUR, Nepal — At 75, Hasta Bahadur Sathighare Magar says he still remembers the time when the slopes above his village in the rural municipality of Rupsekot, in central Nepal, looked dead. Dust blew freely as cattle marauded the barren land. That view has since changed. The barren slopes have ...

The Green our Rooftop project recently won a national commendation at the 2025 AILA Landscape Architecture Awards. Our capable and enthusiastic staff did a good bit more than just maintenance and monitoring. It was a very complicated design with 5,000 plants required as well as a wide variety of native seeds directly sown; this resource had to be sourced from 15 different sources and it was incredibly hard work to bring the plant resources together. Second, the planting occurred in the windy cold of July 2024 with the need to transport the plant material on trolleys and by hand through security and up elevators and stairs. Third, our crew is now doing maintenance and implementing a complex monitoring regime of photopoints, quadrats, counting w**ds and invertebrate survey. We learned that good design and planning, as well as construction in this case, is of course essential but a project like this can't be successful in the end without the skilled and dedicated work of plant sourcing, installation and maintenance. This project will result in a research paper by Melbourne University reviewing the factors of success and financial viability for green roofs at some point in the next year or so as well.

Natural regeneration does work well in arid environments. This example demonstrates that removing degrading processes, i.e. grazing, and letting nature heal does work but it can take a lot of time. 100 years of ecological data has documented the process...

Implementing biodiversity conservation and enhancement is hard work in a peaceful country with a strong economy but try thinking about the many difficult issues you would face if your country was at war. When I read this article I admired the fact that Ukraine ecologists were thinking about and acting on nature recovery during AND after the war while also considering other important objectives of their country and allies like future defense.

Amid the war’s destruction, Ukrainian scientists are seeing signs of an ecological recovery. When the conflict ends, they say, the nation should not rebuild its massive Soviet-era infrastructure and instead continue the rewilding by letting nature keep restoring itself.

We would love more support for the Thin Green Line Foundation through their fundraising trek to Mt Kilimanjaro. Just as a guide this is what your donations would fund:

$100 can help equip a ranger for the field ( boots or jacket, water filtration, or tent etc )

$250 fully equips a ranger for the field

$500 gets a ranger on a basic field training course

$1000 helps equip a remote patrol of 10 rangers to work in the wilderness protecting wildlife

$2500 supports the family of a fallen ranger( typically 150 are killed every a year) usually keeping kids ( average 4 kids ) in school for 4 years, starting a small business for the widow, and provides healthcare (its equivalent to more than a years salary for many rangers in africa, for many its 2 years salary!)

$5000 puts a ranger through a train the trainer course (called Lead Ranger) where they can ho back to help train their fellow rangers in an ongoing capacity

$20,000 can build critical ranger posts throughout the wilderness

$50,000 ( our target) helps build a ranger training facility (classroom and accommodation)

G'day All Our managing director is doing another fundraising trek for a great cause. The Thin Green Line Foundation supports rangers around the world with training, equipment and wages and even the widows and children of fallen rangers. I will be climbing Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania on World Ranger's Day 31 July 2025. The mountain is 5900 m high and Lincoln has never walked that high ever before; it will be a challenge but there is excellent work to support! The website below makes it easy to donate to this great cause; every bit counts!

The PE Restoration Crew planted the Green Our Roof at Treasury Place in Melbourne in July 2024 and have been maintaining and monitoring it ever since. The project was complex because it involved a wide array of plant treatments, from various exotic succulents installed via cuttings, indigenous grassland from local tubestock to direct seeding of various local and Australian natives. The plant procurement process was incredibly complex with around 5000 plants and various seed lots coming from 15 different nurseries and companies. The project was designed to demonstrate that a green roof can be designed and implemented efficiently. The complexity of the design added to the cost to a significant degree but it will create the opportunity to demonstrate what design strategies are effective; Melbourne Univeristy academics will analyse the results and report on the outcomes. The project has now won a citation in the 2025 AILA VIC Landscape Architecture Award for Gardens:

The Green Roof at Treasury Place Melbourne achieved the 2025 AILA VIC Landscape Architecture Award for Gardens on 5th June. Please note that PE sourced the wide variety of exotic, native and local indigenous plants and/or seeds required from 15 different nurseries and installed all of the plants. Exotic succulents were selected by Super Bloom and sourced many as cuttings, a slightly different approach to other projects. Maintenance and monitoring has been happening for a year already. We are observing issues like how w**ds flow through an urban environment; since the gowing media was sterile the only way that w**d propagules get there is through wind in theory.
