The Green our Rooftop project recently won a national commendation at the 2025 AILA Landscape Architecture Awards. Our capable and enthusiastic staff did a good bit more than just maintenance and monitoring. It was a very complicated design with 5,000 plants required as well as a wide variety of native seeds directly sown; this resource had to be sourced from 15 different sources and it was incredibly hard work to bring the plant resources together. Second, the planting occurred in the windy cold of July 2024 with the need to transport the plant material on trolleys and by hand through security and up elevators and stairs. Third, our crew is now doing maintenance and implementing a complex monitoring regime of photopoints, quadrats, counting w**ds and invertebrate survey. We learned that good design and planning, as well as construction in this case, is of course essential but a project like this can't be successful in the end without the skilled and dedicated work of plant sourcing, installation and maintenance. This project will result in a research paper by Melbourne University reviewing the factors of success and financial viability for green roofs at some point in the next year or so as well.
