New LinkedIn data has revealed that 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀, with more and more applicants competing for fewer roles.

The data shared from LinkedIn exclusively with Yahoo Finance reveals some key insights, including:

📈 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗣𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴
Since late 2022, the number of applicants per job ad has nearly doubled, meaning more candidates are competing for vacancies than we have seen in a long time.

👥 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆 ≠ 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆
Recruiters are reporting lots of applications, but it is still a challenge to find suitable talent, with many applicants unqualified or lacking relevant experience. The “spray and pray” approach to submitting resumes is flooding systems without connecting talent to suitable jobs.

📉𝗛𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝘄𝗻
Hiring rates are 21% lower than before the pandemic, partly due to layoffs and reduced worker churn. Fewer roles means more competition for each opportunity.

The job market this year has been tough. Really tough 😮‍💨 Opportunities feel tighter, competition is stronger and with Christmas approaching, the pressure is starting to creep in.

Many people are navigating uncertainty, stretching savings or trying to stay hopeful after a redundancy they never expected.

If you are in this position right now, I want you to know that I genuinely empathise with you ❤️ Your feelings are completely valid. The stress, the frustration, the emotional fatigue that come from sending application after application are real and can be incredibly disheartening.

💡𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝗮𝗱.

Over the coming weeks, alongside submitting your online applications 👩🏽‍💻, I encourage you to shift some of your focus from 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗷𝗼𝗯𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲.

🌱Reach out to people you already know. Reconnect over a coffee ☕if you can. Let them know what you’re exploring. Share your story and be curious about theirs.
🌱Then, take it one step further: research companies that interest you, find their key decision makers on LinkedIn and connect with a thoughtful message expressing your interest. You really have nothing to lose!
🌱And if you’re tired 😵, take a breath and do something that brings you joy. Looking after your wellbeing during this process is critical.

As you move through the next few weeks, remember that opportunities can happen in the most unexpected ways. Not from searching harder, but from stepping outside the usual places we look for work. It's often through the people we meet and the conversations we have that everything can truly change 💫

What we see each year, is just how needed we are and how valuable the support and guidance we provide to people is. We educate, inform, empower and most importantly listen to people’s stories to help them navigate their situation with confidence and hope 🙏✨

⭐ 𝗟𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 ⭐

The latest Internet Vacancy report released by Jobs and Skills Australia has revealed that national online job ads decreased in Feb 2025 by ⬇️5.9%, and by ⬇️15% year on year.

This is the largest monthly decrease 📉 in job advertisements since late 2022.

Some key insights from the report include:

💡Job ads decreased across all major occupation groups for the month, with the strongest decreases seen for Managers 👩🏽‍💼 (down by 9.7%) and Machine Operators & Drivers 🚚 (down by 7.1%).
💡All states and territories experienced decreased recruitment activity over the month.
💡There is a significant increase in demand for Psychiatrists, with a 90% increase in job ads from the 2019 monthly average.

There's no doubt the market is competitive at the moment, however, job seekers can still secure opportunities by focusing their efforts on proactive job search strategies, skill development and exploring opportunities in high-demand sectors.

Some very interesting labour market information 📊 has been released by Jobs and Skills Australia, with the key takeaways highlighted below:

💡The job market is softening slightly. It is a tight market. Job vacancies have eased but are still higher 📈 than the pre-Covid period.

💡Health Care & Social Assistance 👩🏽‍⚕️🏥👨🏽‍🦽‍➡️ will have the highest job growth, followed by Professional, Scientific and Technology services and Construction 👷🏽. Manufacturing will have negative growth.

💡96% of jobs growth will require a tertiary qualification 📚 (from Certificate III and above).

💡37 emerging roles have been identified 🔍and classed into 4 clusters: Net Zero; Health, Care & Medical; Data Technologies; and Science and Engineering

💡What do employers want?
1) Post-school education & training is ESSENTIAL - >90% of new jobs will require advanced vocational education or University qualifications.
2) Experience is NECESSARY – Work experience is important for young people

💡75% of employers place just as much emphasis if not more on personal qualities (interpersonal skills) 🗣️🫱🏼‍🫲🏼than they do on technical skills.

💡25% of jobs are filled through word of mouth and 12% filled through jobseekers directly approaching an employer.

It is evident from these insights that The Australian labour market is evolving, with a strong demand for skilled workers, particularly in Health Care, Technology, and Construction. Employers are placing increasing value on post-school education, work experience, and interpersonal skills. As job vacancies remain higher than pre-COVID levels, networking and direct engagement with employers are key job search strategies. With 96% of future job growth requiring a tertiary qualification, now is the time to upskill.

The Occupation Shortage List (OSL), released annually by Jobs and Skills Australia, highlights occupations facing critical shortages 📉 across the country.

The 2024 OSL shows that many of the largest employing occupations, particularly in Health 🏥, Aged Care 👵🏽, Education 🏫, Construction 👷🏽‍♀️, and Business Services 👩🏽‍💻, are struggling 😒 to find enough workers.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 𝗢𝗦𝗟 - 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗳𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲:
⭐ Aged or Disabled Carers
⭐ Primary School Teachers
⭐ Secondary School Teachers
⭐Truck Drivers

✔️ These roles employ nearly 825,000 workers and are vital to the economy.
✔️ Many have been in shortage for three or more years, particularly in trades, health and community services.
✔️ Persistent shortages are driven by an ageing population, technological advancements, worker supply constraints, pay and working conditions and policy changes.
✔️ Many of these occupations are highly gender-skewed, with only a few, like Solicitors and General Practitioners, having a more balanced workforce.

Addressing these shortages will require long-term, holistic solutions, including better workforce planning, education pathways and industry support.

Having career counselled hundreds of students over the years, I’ve had countless conversations with parents who share one common concern: “Will my child find the right career path?” 🛣️

As a parent myself, I think it's normal to worry 😓 and wonder if our children are on the right path. What I've learned however, is that every child is unique and, therefore, on their own unique timeline.

Some will know early on what excites them 😀🔬, while others will meander, exploring 🔎 and learning along the way. Career development is a process that doesn’t always align with societal expectations or our own timelines as parents.

What matters is fostering an environment where curiosity about life and the world of work 🌍 is encouraged, exploration is celebrated 🎉and every step they take (even if not the right one for them) is seen as a valuable lesson and part of their growth 🌱

Our role isn’t to map out their future for them but to fan the small sparks we see. The ones that bring them joy, curiosity or determination. Eventually, they’ll find their flame ❤️‍🔥, even if it looks different from what we envisioned.
